ALERT TO ALL AUDITORS INVOLVED WITH ENERGYWORKS KC REBATES.

It has come to our attention that some contractors are NOT informing customers BEFORE work is done (including audits) that EnergyWorks KC (EWKC) rebates are considered taxable income and that the City of Kansas City, Missouri is required by law to file a form 1099 for all rebates whether paid directly to the customer or assigned to be paid to the contractor.  You must inform customers that EWKC rebates are considered taxable income.  This tax requirement DOES NOT apply to rebates from MGE or KCP&L.

Additionally, the Metropolitan Energy Center cannot process rebate applications that are not accompanied by a valid, signed W-9 form from the customer.

Attached is a letter from the City of Kansas City, Missouri that you may give to your customers explaining the requirement to report EWKC rebates as income.
