Art books, art supplies, artwork & art talks
There are lots of activities going on here at VISA and at the Visual Arts Departments at Camosun and UVic as well as at the galleries around town as we reach the third week in this summery September.
We are looking for art books for our book sale this Saturday and Sunday, September 24 & 25. We are also happy to accept literary fiction, poetry and books on writing. If you have any books to donate, please drop them off at the school before Friday, September 23 at 5pm. All those donating books valued at $25 or more, will receive a tax receipt. This is a great opportunity to cut down on clutter, to share your book wealth with others and to support the cause of art. All proceeds from book sale will go towards supporting our Draw by Drawing Drop-In that we run for the mere cost of $5/session with all supplies included. These sessions are a great way to explore creativity and also they provide an excellent form of community with the opportunity for like-minded people to make art together.
The book sale is part of a larger Pop-Up Shop sponsored by artsREACH, Sept 24 & 25. Here you will find alternative and unusual art supplies sold by the bagful ($10 large, $5 small) and a Mystery Grab Bag art project for kids!
In addition, this weekend's event will also include Victoria's newest art collective BOXCAR6. They will be showcasing and selling their work for very accessible prices (or according to their fearless leader Clare Thomas, for "very cheap!!"). BOXCAR 6 is comprised of former and current VISA students.
So come by VISA this weekend for the art supplies, art books, art, or to try your own hand at making. Pop Up Shop, Art Book Sale, Art Exhibit & Sale take place September 24 & 25, 11am-4pm at the Vancouver Island School of Art Both adults and kids are welcome!
There are also some exciting artist lectures talks coming up at VISA, Camosun and UVic, as well as some great exhibitions to check out around town. See rest of newsletter for more information.

Fifty Fifty Arts Collective: Julie Gennai
Continuing until October 8th
The drawing is its own. It's nothing more than a following of something that already knows what it is. The drawing unfolds exactly how it has planned, and the drawer has little to do with it. The drawer also has everything to do with it. They grow like weeds of movement and line, sometimes asking for colour. Without us even knowing it, they contain symbols and information. In the practice of drawing, it's always unpredictable what unfolds, and the moment of "it's done" remains poorly defined. Sometimes boredom or fatigue are markers - but they mean little. In truth, they could go on forever. Drawing is at the root of something only vaguely executed, but infinitely important. It marks a moment of translation from the invisible to the visible, from the imagined to the made, from the unknown to the defined.

Why Can't Minimal?
For the average person, Minimalism, a mid-20th century modernist genre, has a reputation for being coldly intellectual, abstract, or hard to understand. Why Can't Minimal, curated by John G. Hampton, both challenges and engages the critiques of minimalism. In his hands, art history is witty, candid and speculative. Artists:
