The art of curating

The role of a curator in visual art is similar to that of a choreographer in dance. The curator selects artists and artwork, and then decides on the arrangement in a gallery space. In the last 15 years, curators have become a more more visible part of the art scene and we now have curator "art stars" as seen in articles such as: Who Wants to Be a Curator? or  8 Super-Curators You Need to Know and 10 Cutting Edge Curators. Many schools now offer grad programs specializing in curating and there is also a growing range of new curatorial residency programs.

The "artist as curator" is a phenomenon that has become prominent in the last few decades. The Vancouver Art Gallery has a program called Artist's Choice where artists are asked to curate an exhibition from the gallery's collection in conjunction with showing their own work. Artists are attracted to this role because of the excitement involved in creating a conversation between diverse kinds of artwork; works that will only be seen together during this one occasion.

The Slide Room Gallery (lower level of VISA) offers opportunities for artists interested in curating exhibitions (see "submissions"). The gallery, a non-profit organization with its own Board of Directors, has a mandate for curated exhibitions of three or more artists, specifically to encourage curatorial practice. Artist Laura Gildner, who is also President of the Slide Room Gallery Board, is seen in the image above installing her second Slide Room Gallery curatorial project, Consumed. As one of the many components of this exhibition, Laura has created a beach with real sand where several tv sets with video images will rest. Laura describes her curatorial process:

"The idea for Consumed came about fairly organically. I tend to gravitate towards works of art that speak to interests or issues I'm thinking about and have learned to trust those instincts when sourcing inspiration for my own projects or organizing a show. Lately consumption (both in excess and lack thereof) is something I'm reminded of multiple times throughout the day whether it be in an environmental, cultural, social or political context. Curating is very much an extension of an art practice: it takes time, energy, hard work, and imagination to put a show together, but once an idea is in motion the possibilities can seem almost endless. One by one, I found artists working directly with ideas surrounding consumption and popular culture, each very different from one another aesthetically yet sharing a common creative backbone. I am extremely grateful that despite geographical distance, all of them agreed to be a part of this exhibit and together I feel they offer a compelling look into why remaining conscious of our consumption is increasingly relevant."

Consumed opens this Saturday, September 26 at 6pm with a curatorial talk by Laura Gildner. Go to our Facebook event page to join: Consumed.

For more information on the curatorial process, read curator Hans Ulrich Obrist's Guardian article on the role of the curator: The art of curation. And for a more historical perspective on curatorial practices:

For those of you who would like to learn more about the curatorial practice, and want to have hands-on experience curating an exhibition, including all the behind-the-scenes details such as developing an idea, approaching artists, producing a catalogue, writing a curatorial essay, promotion and installation, we are offering a 12-week course that starts this Wed Sept 23, 6-9pm: Curatorial Studies.

Help us purchase parking for bicycles!

Many of our students come to school by bicycle but have no place to lock up their bikes. We need to raise $2000 to purcahse and install two bike racks for 14-20 bikes. This price includes the cost of the rack, shipping and installation.

We would like to ask you to consider donating a small amount (you choose!) to help fund this much needed piece of equipment.

By making it easier for students to use their bikes, you will be helping many individual students, while at the same time making Victoria a more liveable city by encouraging less people to use cars.

You can make your tax deductible donation by using the paypal link below.
