Art in the margins

Tonight at 6pm (Friday, Jan 16) is the opening of VISA Turns 10 Founders Exhibition showing the current work of John Luna, Xane St Phillip and myself in the Slide Room Gallery. A little over ten years ago I convinced Xane and John that starting an art school was a great idea. They both jumped on board and provided me with enormous support and guidance as I maneuvered through the reality of my great idea. The exhibition celebrates our time together at VISA, and it is also a marker of the importance of making art. Like all of you, all of us have extremely full schedules: John teaches high school full-time and is the father of three; Xane teaches and owns his own business and has several part time jobs as well; and I run a school, a gallery and teach. And yet despite the continuous distractions that have come our way, we have all continued to make art. Recently I have begun to feel that my art practice is similar to the notes one writes in the margins of books or journals; these are significant ideas and thoughts, but they don't quite make it to the main page (one has to make a living after all). We could all bemoan the fact we don't get enough time to make art, but I think what is more important is that we all make it a point to make art no matter what else is going on in our lives. Please come to our opening tonight in the Slide Room Gallery and celebrate with the three of us as we let the marginalia seep into the main page for a brief time. VISA Founders Exhibition opens 6 pm, Friday, February 16, Slide Room Gallery (lower level of VISA). |

Collage Studies in Composition Workshop
Sunday, Jan 18, 1-4pm
In this workshop you will work with simple materials and tools such as coloured and patterned papers, scissors and glue. These are all you need to create exciting and vibrant compositions. Working with a "paper palette" of colours and patterns is the most immediate way to arrange various elements on a picture plane. Basic principles of design and how to implement them in collage compositions will be covered. This workshop is perfect for you if you are looking for new ways to approach the design of your work, or if you want an easy, stress-free way to do something creative.
Instructor: Wendy Welch
Tuition: $65.00 (3 hrs)
