The joy of collecting art

Many people think that you have to be rich to collect art. This is not true. Anyone can be an art collector, and a way some people get into the world of collecting is to buy work from students or emerging artists.

A great example of two renowned collectors without financial means are the Vogels, a New York couple who have been collecting art for years. They made a modest living and lived in a small apartment and shared a great passion for art. The documentary Herb and Dorothy reveals a personal story of this humble couple's relationship with each other, and with the artists whose work became a vital part part of their collection.

You have a great opportunity to start or enhance your art collection this Sunday by attending our VISA Turns 10 Exhibition and Sale (Sunday, November 2, 6-8 pm). There are 85 works of art on display, all 10" x 10", all selling for $310 and created especially for this exhibition.

My own art collection makes me feel alive and calm every day. Sometimes there is nothing I like better than sitting down with a cup of tea and staring off into the distance at an artwork on my wall. It gives me a place to let my imagination wander. I fully understand the Vogels' desire to spend money on art even when cash is in short supply. I buy art for the sheer pleasure of getting to look at these works every day, but it is also a good investment, not in the sense the work will go up in value, but because art is worth more than you think. When I started the the business of running school 10 years ago, I did not have the usual things that net worth is dependent on (home, car, investments), but I was able to obtain a line of credit because my art collection had value. Who knew? How typical that an artist would be the last to realize the value of art!

Come out to our VISA Turns 10 Exhibition and Sale this Sunday, November 2 and find a special treasure for yourself that will have more value than you can imagine over the years to come. For more information, see  the article below.

Drawing with Scissors
Sunday, Nov 2, 1-4pm

(there are still some spaces left)

The title of this workshop is based on the cut-outs that Matisse did towards the end of his life, despite being very ill. Matisse imagined that he was "drawing with scissors" when he cut out shapes freehand. He used his wall as a surface, to which he attached wonderful compositions made from papers that were hand-coloured with gouache. (Matisse's cut-outs are currently on display at MOMA).

In this workshop you will work with an assortment of coloured and patterned papers and scissors to make collages with an emphasis on designing strong compositions based on shape, colour and pattern. The focus will be on inventive play with shapes.
Suitable for beginners.
