Vancouver Island School of Art Newsletter

Please forgive the second sending of this email but many people are emailing and phoning to let me know that the day of the 10th Anniversary Gala is Sunday not Saturday.

Corrected version below. Hope to see you at the gala!
Only TWO more days until our Anniversary Gala at the Canoe Brewpub
SUNDAY October 19, 7-10 pm

Please consider coming to our 10th Anniversary Gala if you haven't already bought tickets for this event. It will be a great night out with wonderful food prepared by the chef at the Canoe especially for this event. The evening will also include a complimentary drink, anniversary cakes courtesy of Cascadia Bakery and entertainment with a live band, DJ and magic show. You will get a chance to meet and talk with many interesting people, who share an interest in the arts in Victoria. Tickets are available online: visaturns10.com

You will have a great time, meet new people and see familiar faces, while also celebrating the longevity of the Vancouver Island School of Art. We need your support to forge on into our next decade!

We are delighted that the Canoe Brewpub has turned over its entire venue to us for our anniversary celebration. The gala event will include food, complimentary drink, and entertainment by local band Sidecar, and renowned Victoria DJ Benji Duke, and magician The Great Giffoni. CTV's Adam Sawatsky will be our Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Each table will have drawing materials for those who wish to doodle, draw, or write poems or notes to be displayed on our Wall of Art for all to see. In addition, all participants will be provided with a complimentary VISA Turns 10 commemorative sketchbook.

The event will also feature a live art auction moderated by the dynamic Alison Ross from Kilshaw's. Five beautiful artworks  from selected artists will be up for auction (Sherrard Grauer, Jeremy Herndl, Laura Harris, Rick Leong and Sara Robichaud). VISA Turns 10 tote bags will be for sale (each containing a prize) and we'll be raffling off bags full of special gifts. The evening will be topped off with a special anniversary cake and dancing.

Your $75 ticket price includes: appetizers (valued at $35/person), cake, a complimentary beverage, and commemorative sketchbook. Tax receipts for $35 will be provided upon request.

You will learn to bind your own sketchbooks, notebooks, journals and portfolios in this afternoon bookbinding workshop. Three non-adhesive techniques will be covered: two Japanese stab bindings and Coptic binding. Stab bindings make elegant portfolios and photo albums while Coptic binding makes nice sketchbooks, notebooks and journals. With these techniques, you will be able to make sketchbooks using drawing, watercolor paper and recycled materials such as book covers, record covers, sandpaper, wood or cereal boxes. Handmade books make great gifts (for yourself and for those who already have everything).
Suitable for beginners.

Tuition: $65.00 (3 hrs)  All materials included
Islamic Design 1
Sunday, Oct 26, 1-4pm

Islamic patterns are intriguing to look at because they are both simple and visually complex. Simple because they are based on only a few geometric shapes such as the circle and triangle, and complex because of how these shapes are repeated. This afternoon workshop will introduce you to the techniques involved in making Islamic patterns. Through a series of step-by-step exercises, you will work from a pre-formed grid as well as develop your own pattern and several variations of a design.
Suitable for beginners.

Tuition: $65.00 (3 hrs) All materials included
