Drawn together for the love of drawing

I saw a lot of really interesting work in London in just a few days including an exhibition of the collaborative work of Arnulf Rainer and Dieter Roth. These two artists have been collaborating for over 20 years by drawing on each other's drawings, each responding to the other's marks with their own marks.

We usually have an image of the artist working on a solitary basis in their studio, especially when it comes to more traditional formats such as drawing and painting. We also see drawing and painting as being somewhat precious in that it gets framed and installed on a wall. You don't think of artists letting other artists draw or paint on their work after it is 'finished'. It is an eye-opener to think of Rainer and Roth working together and drawing on each other's work to create a conversation using the language of art. As viewer familiar with the work of both of these artists, it was interesting to pick out the individual set of marks made by Rainer and the ones made by Roth. Equally fascinating was how the drawings held together as unified compositions seemingly made by one person. The works highlighted ideas of authorship, as well as ideas around what makes a work complete.

Of particular interest was the way the gallery installed some double-sided drawings (see image below). Not only did this give you the opportunity to see two sides of each work but it also played on the idea of the double authorship. More information on Dieter Roth can be found on this fascinating interactive website created for his retrospective at MOMA. And examples of Rainer's work, who is known in particular for his frantic drawings marks on photographs, can be found here: Rainer.

GOUACHE PAINTING WORKSHOP
Sunday, May 25, 10-5pm

This workshop will introduce you to gouache (pronounced 'gwash'), an opaque water-based paint medium that can be used to create beautifully saturated colours. While similar to watercolour, gouache has its own unique qualities in that the surface dries to a smooth velvety finish; and because it is opaque, you can layer light over dark or you can work on tinted or dark papers. The workshop covers mixing and blending paints, colour theory, and learning to paint basic forms. You will also discover how to use non-traditional painting tools such as dried flowers, twigs and sticks and to do monoprinting with your paint palette to create unusual and interesting lines and surfaces. Suitable for complete beginners.

Instructor: Kate Scoones
Cost: $125 (all materials included)

MAKING YOUR OWN SKETCHBOOK
Sunday, June 1,  1-4pm

You will learn to bind your own sketchbooks, notebooks, zines and journals in this afternoon bookbinding workshop. Two non-adhesive types of binding will be covered: the pamphlet stitch and the long stitch. You can use the basic pamphlet stitch to bind zines, booklets and pamphlets (hence its name). The long stitch is great for making notebooks, sketchbooks and journals. With these two techniques, you will be able to make sketchbooks using drawing or watercolor paper and recycled materials such as book covers, record covers, sandpaper or cereal boxes. Handmade books make great gifts so you can make some for yourself and your friends. No previous skills required. Suitable for complete beginners.

DRAWING AS MEDITATION
Sunday, June 1, 10am-5pm

Simple line drawing is an excellent way to relax and focus, and consequently, a perfect way to develop a daily meditation practice. This workshop covers two approaches to drawing as meditation. The first part will involve close observation of natural forms and really learning to slow down and draw what you see. For the other component you will learn to make intricate rhythmic marks that will look like something in between a doodle and a complex fabric or wallpaper design. Both methods involve 'mindfulness' where the focus is on being aware of the present moment. This workshop would be of interest to you whether or not you have experience with meditation and if you are simply looking for a way to relax and want to experience the joy and focus that drawing can bring. Suitable for complete beginners.
