Vancouver Island School of Art Newsletter

Dear Students and Friends of VISA,

One of the delights, and sometimes curse, of being an artist is that you see things in the world that other people might not notice. The way the shadows fall on the wall, the debris at the side of the road, a fire alarm box in a gallery space; all have the potential to be read as a work of art. Its a delight because it is great to stop and reimagine the everyday as being something sublime or even divine. Its a curse because with an artist's eye, everything starts looking like art and it is sometimes hard to get on with the daily act of living with all the potential art and materials for art everywhere.

I enjoyed reading the interview with Koen van den Broek in this month's edition of Art in America. He makes strong powerful paintings based on really simple and basic subject matter such as cracks on the sidewalks or shadows on the road. van den Broek  is having an exhibition of his work at the Friedman Benda gallery in New York. I know it is not a new concept to find beauty in the ordinary, however I still find it fascinating to be reminded that the ordinary is never really that ordinary especially through the eyes of this painter.

Of course its not just artists who observe the ordinary. If you're not familiar with the radio show This American Life its really worth checking out; recently there was an episode that focussed on Mapping. Each the show chooses a specific theme and has three different stories on the theme. Ira Glass' introductory segment focusses on a map company who is hired by a group of lawyers to document every crack, elevation, protrusion and imperfection in the all the sidewalks of New York city. They create a yearly map that documents all their findings. It sounds and looks like an art project in the making, however these workers are documenting the sidewalks of New York because a person is not allowed to sue the city for a fault in the sidewalk unless it has been documented and the city has been notified. These crack mappers make sure every fault in the sidewalk is recorded for so lawyers can bring forward potential law suits against the city on behalf of their clients.

All this makes me think about how each of us goes through the city with a particular focus. So the next time you see a crack in the sidewalk, you can think site-specific drawing, potential law suit or ordinary occurrence in the wear and tear of concrete.  One shape can transform its meaning depending on the experience and motive of the viewer.

Saturday and Sunday, May 4 & 5, 10am-5pm

This workshop is an exploration of the crossover between architecture and sculpture. Students discover how architectural design principles can be used in the creation of sculptures, and how artistic objects can be understood as architectural models. Contemporary examples, drawn from both architecture and the fine arts, are discussed and may be used as starting points for participants' own creative work. Buildings and other structures in Victoria will also be considered for the development idea in artworks. Various suitable materials, and how they may be used creatively, are discussed throughout the workshop.
