Dear Friends of VISA,
For those of you who missed our Open House the school will be open this week and then on December 27 & 28, December 31, January 2 & 3. Hours: 9-5pm. There is lots of interesting work on view so we hope to see you during the holiday season. One of the biggest pleasures I get from looking at the work in the Open House each semester is to see the expanse and diversity of creative expression. To me the success of any school is when students leave with a discovery and true sense of their own voice. At each Open House I am always delighted to see new and exciting solutions to various creative problems presented to our students by our instructors.
I cannot imagine a life without making art. No matter how busy I am each week, there must always be time for the studio. This is when the immensity of the world's problems can drift away and I can totally immerse myself in the simple act of making. Art is a way to be both in and out of the world at the same time. For those of you who have a slight inkling of wanting to take art but not to sure where to start, we are now offering a Saturday morning introductory drawing course from 10am-1pm. I can't think of a better way to get your weekend off to a creative start.
In the meantime if you are looking for a book that is filled with interesting ideas on possible creative projects, I highly recommend How To Be An Explorer of the World: Portable Life Museum. When I need to find inspiration from words, I tend to go to the writings of Agnes Martin. Although one of my all-time favourite art books, and a book I re-read on a regular basis is Seeing is Forgetting the Name of What One Sees. This is book is a biography of Robert Irwin by Lawrence Weshler. But as you will see if you have time to check out the pdf link, it is so much more. Consider the last two pdf links my Christmas gifts to you... they will not disappoint.
I wish everybody a wonderful holiday season and looking forward to being in touch with you in 2013.
