Recipes sought from young chefs

Calling all budding chefs: You still have time to enter the Kellogg's and Foodland Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, as part of the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival.

Young chefs from across the island can submit their  own original recipe for a delicious and creative lunchtime meal that's healthy, simple to prepare and features at least one fresh locally sourced product (produce or protein) as a main ingredient.

Contestants submitting the top three recipes from two age categories (8-12 years and 13-17 years) will be invited to prepare their dish live in front of eventgoers and present their dishes on the main stage for tasting and scoring by celebrity chef judges Jason Fox, Nobu Matsuhisa and Iron Chef Hiroyuki.

The contest is part of the "HMAA Presents Keiki in the Kitchen: Food, Fitness & Fun," a family culinary outing that will feature celebrity chefs, cooking demos and dishes from Hawai'i's best food trucks by Street Grindz. The event is slated for Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Honolulu Zoo.

Click here to complete online entry form or to download.  The entry form must be accompanied with a photo of completed dish. It can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to: Hawai'i Food & Wine Festival, Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, 3538 Waialae Ave., #203, 96816.

What other surfing event features "Da Blah Lah" division for folks boasting a 40"-plus waistline or a "Bolo Head (Crew Cut)" division for our follicle-free friends? The three-day contest also holds amateur and professional competition for surfers from age 13 and under to 60 and older.

'Snowpiercer' packed with action

"Snowpiercer" is a 2013 South Korean sci-fi action film based on the French graphic novel "Le Transperceneige" by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette, and stars Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt and Kang-ho Song.

Set in the distant future, global attempts to placate and stabilize environmental weather changes backfire and lead to a severe ice age, desolating everything on earth. Yet the human race as we know it somehow manages to exist, uniquely, on a megatrain that encircles the earth through a large world track that had been created prior to the ice age. While the concept is frightening and reminiscent of our own past history, the film begins to delve deeper into the ramifications of such organizations.

With a modern version of what could be considered a "Noah's Ark" for human beings, the train quickly becomes a reminder of past social injustices because of the way people are categorized and the method of keeping them to their destined living quarters. The back of the train is kept dark, dank and beyond dirty, and represents the less desirable class - the poor, the weak and the sickly. Who they were in their past lives, we don't really know but ultimately their paths have been chosen by another and there is no hope for anything other than the lives they now lead.

For food, they are fed blocks of a gelatinous substance while being poked and prodded by armed guards who watch and oversee them. The inhumane conditions in which they are forced to submit to can only lead to one thing and eventually an uprising becomes eminent.

Instigated by an elder gentleman with missing limbs named Gilliam (John Hurt), Curtis (Chris Evans), Edgar (Jamie Bell) and Tanya (Octavia Spencer) revolt after the capture of two small children by the guards. It really comes down to the ambiguity of their capture and an unknown fate for the children that any parent would fight tooth and nail over. The remainder of the film is then full of graphic mayhem as the group of rebels fight their way forward, only to uncover missing puzzle pieces to the elusiveness of the train's founder and engineer.

Directed by Joon-ho Bong, the film is masterfully articulated and has ominous overtones that certainly make you beg for the group to persevere. If not, for their own freedom, but more importantly, to uncover the truth behind this experimental society.

Also, I will add that Chris Evans is marvelous in this movie and really gives you a glimpse into the true action star that he can and will be, post-comic-book universe. Let's just say, Evans has "it" and I could easily see him falling into the same pursuits as other actors like Tom Cruise (MI films) and Matt Damon (Bourne Identity saga).

In the end, I thought this was a smart film with loads of action and just enough mystique to keep me guessing and speculating throughout the movie. You can catch it in theaters or on VOD (from the comfort of your home). It's a definite must see!

Rated R | 126 mins.
