Often I am asked for ideas on team building activities for departments, work areas or teams. The intention of these activities is to build relationships and trust with a group of people that work together regularly. So what is one of my favorite activities? Great question for this week's newsletter.
In fun,

How to Get Lost On the Moon
"None of us is as smart as all of us."
--Ken Blanchard
One activity I participated in years ago and have lead as a facilitator is Lost on The Moon. This activity has your team lost together on the moon with only fifteen items. Each member must rank the items individually in terms of importance to the team's survival and then the team ranks the items using consensus. The most amazing and humbling aspect of this activity is the way the team almost always outperforms the individual. Unless you have a NASA expert on the team this exercise will show the importance and potential of collective wisdom or two heads are better than one.The link to the activity, items to be ranked and NASA's answers can be found here.
If your team has already performed this activity try Lost at Sea found at this link. While the activities themselves can be fun the most important aspect of the activity is the debrief questions that should follow. A debrief is simply a set of questions that are asked after an activity to help better understand the dynamics of the team and its performance. A few of my favorite debrief questions include the following:
1) | What went well with how the team performed the activity?
| 2) | What was missing from the team dynamics that would have helped the team perform at a higher level?
| 3) | Where was their trust amongst the members?
| 4) | Where was there conflict? Was the team able to overcome it, and if so, how? |
Another set of potential questions in order:
1) What surprised you about the activity?
2) How did the activity make you feel as a team member?
3) What can we learn from the way we approached and performed this activity?
4) What will we do differently next time we work together?
Question for You: Are you looking for a team building activity that will help your team appreciate each other more and work at a higher level? Are you willing to look hard at the dynamics of your team and truthfully ask the debrief questions to uncover areas of conflict and opportunity for growth? Action for You: Try playing the Lost on the Moon or Lost at Sea activities listed above. The total time needed will depend on your team's size but allow a minimum of one hour to possibly ninety minutes to complete the ranking sheet, reach consensus on the fifteen items and debrief. Choose the debrief questions listed above and have each member complete them individually first and then share as a group.
