    Invasion of the Alien Species
Part III: Invasive Insects and                            Microscopic Organisms

In the final article of our series on Invasive Species, we'll explore invasive pests and microscopic organisms that threaten the survival of native plants and animals. In Parts I and II of Invasion of the Alien Species we learned how introduced or non-native plants and animals cost the U.S. about $123 billion per year. With the increasing threat of pests and microbes to plants, animals, and humans, the total U.S. cost has been reported to be as high as $137 billion annually. Globally, more than $1.4 trillion is spent due to the damage caused each year.

The list of invasive pests and microbes that affect the U.S. is quite extensive. Like their animal and plant counterparts, invasive pests and microbes are able to infest a native host and spread to surrounding species when there is little or no resistance built up against them. The top eight pests and microbes listed in the following charts below are just a few of the many that are more specific to the south and Alabama.

Here are some steps to help prevent the spread of invasive species of all kinds:

* Learn to identify the invasive species in your area and report any sightings to the Alabama Cooperative Extension Office or the Southeast Early Detection Network.
* Clean your boots, gear, truck bed, tires and harvesting equipment after working a site to prevent spreading seeds, insects or spores to a new location.
* Control invasive species along fencerows, ditches and other areas adjacent to fields.
* Always use weed-free hay and feed for your animals
* Remove and clear any junk piles or other areas where bees can nest.

Back In the Saddle Again

A lifelong city man, tired of the rat race, decides he is going to give up the rat race, move to the country and become a chicken farmer.

He buys a nice, used chicken farm and moves in.
He goes into a farm supply store and orders two hundred chicks, explaining to the owner that he wants to start a poultry operation.

Two weeks later, he returns to the store and buys another two hundred chicks. The owner is curious, but doesn't say anything. The same thing happens when the farmer returns in another two weeks for another two hundred chicks.

When he returns for the fourth time, the owner's curiosity is too much for him, so he asks the new farmer why he keeps coming back for so many chicks.

The new farmer says, "Well, I guess I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what. I think I'm either planting them too deep or too close together."

Unhappy with his lack of success, the farmer sends off a report of what he has done to the local extension office, asking for advice. Three weeks later, the reply comes back, saying simply, "Please send soil sample."

Planting
June
Gardening Guide

Fruits and Nuts:

Continue spray program for all fruits. Layer grapes. Thin apples and peaches if too thick.

Vegetable Seed:

Plant beans, fieldpeas, Pumpkins, corn, squash, watermelons and cantaloupes. Follow the AL Vegetable Garden Planting Chart for planting dates.

Vegetable Plants:

Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and sweet potato vine cuttings. Harvest spring planted vegetables and replant with summer vegetables.

Annuals and Perennials:
Deadhead flowers to promote continued blooms. Continue planting garden mums. Continue to plant mums and pinch out tips. Watch for insects and diseases.

Bulbs:
Remove foliage from bulbs that have yellowed and died. Watch for aphids and thrips on summer bulbs.

Roses:
Spray or dust now for insects and diseases. Apply fungicide to prevent and control black spot. Fertilize monthly according to a soil test. Flowering container-grown plants may be planted. Prune climbing roses after first big growth.

Shrubs:

Watch for lacebugs on shrubs like azaleas, pyracanthas, dogwoods and cherry laurels. Fertilize now and water as needed. Pinch out tips to keep long shoots from developing. Take cuttings from semi-mature wood for rooting. Trim evergreen branches.

Lawns:

Keep a regular schedule for fertilizing and watering. Planting may continue if lawn is moist. Mow weekly. Continue spraying for weeds as needed.

Miscellaneous:

*If scale insects continue on shrubs, use materials other than oils.

*Keep gardens watered, especially newly planted plants.

*Air layer houseplants to decrease "legginess."
