      Performing a Prescribed Burn

Throughout history, fire has been an important part in the development and maintenance of the land. Wildfires clear woody plants and trees and encourage the growth of grasslands, fruit bearing shrubs and forage producing grasslands. Fires often begin by naturally occurring lightning strikes. However, man has also been the catalyst for setting fires--accidentally or intentionally. Native Americans typically would start fires to clear the land and grow food, to aid them in hunting or to protect their villages from wildfires. These controlled burns served a purpose and were carefully monitored.

Today, controlled or prescribed burns are still seen as a beneficial management tool. A well-planned prescribed burn can:
1) increase plant growth

2) control weeds and woody plants
3) improve forage production
4) recycle nutrients in old plant growth
5) reduce risk of wildfires
6) improve wildlife habitats

The first step in preparing for a prescribed burn is to learn about fire behavior, including fire and smoke management, local burning laws and the needs and responses of affected plants and animals. A qualified and experienced burn manager has the necessary knowledge and training to assist in a prescribed burn. State and local forestry commissions also offer training and certification classes. The Alabama Forestry Commission and the Alabama Prescribed Fire Council offer training and certification courses for residents, as well as information about controlled burns and permits.

The next step is to have an established goal and plan for the burn. Know the main objectives for the burn taking into consideration the characteristics for the site, weather conditions, timing of the burn and what type of burn is planned. A step-by-step plan should be prepared in advance to obtain permits, prepare fireguards/firebreaks, gather necessary equipment and establish a work crew. Since weather can be unpredictable, three separate dates should be scheduled in the plan.

Once a plan is completed, notify neighbors, fire departments and local law enforcement officials. The fire department should be given a copy of the burn plan, in case there is an emergency. Depending upon the location of the burn, state officials may need to be notified in advance due to the possibility of smoke impacting surrounding areas. Do not burn an area if smoke will affect a highway, airport, hospital, nursing home, residential area or school.

Once the burn is complete, carefully patrol the perimeter and monitor the area for signs of wildfire or burning embers for at least one day after the last smoke is visible. A wind gust can send hidden sparks up to 100 yards igniting another fire.

Prescribed burns are a cost-effective and beneficial management tool used in forestry and agriculture. However, safety should always be the top priority. A good plan will not only help in achieving the objectives, but ensure that lives and property are protected.

Early Morning Prayer

Dear Lord,

So far today I've done all right. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent. I'm very thankful for that.

But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed, and from then on, I'm probably going to need a lot more help.

Amen.

Planting
February
Gardening Guide

Fruits and Nuts:

Planting season continues for dormant trees. Fertilize fruit trees now. Grapes should be fertilized with one half the recommended amount now and the other half after fruit sets. Continue dormant pruning and grafting. Begin strawberry plantings.

Vegetable Seed:

Begin planting vegetables listed for central Alabama now, including collards, salsify and Swiss chard. To cold frames, add tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and eggplants. Follow the AL Vegetable Garden Planting Chart for planting dates.

Vegetable Plants:

Plant cabbage, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and onions.

Annuals and Perennials:
Replant early plantings of hardy annuals. Begin preparing beds for summer annuals.

Bulbs:
Plant amaryllis, cannas, gladiolus and zephyranthes in south Alabama. Delay planting for a few more weeks in North Alabama.

Roses:
In south Alabama, prune hybrid tea roses. Delay pruning for a few more weeks in north Alabama. Continue planting.

Shrubs:

Planting season continues. Graft camellias in central and south Alabama. Before new growth begins, spray all shrubs with fungicide and prune. Do not prune early-blooming species; it will remove flower buds.

Lawns:

Begin checking on fertilizers needed for lawn.

Miscellaneous:

*Check on re-growth of houseplants. Begin fertilizing with liquid or soluble fertilizer.

*Potted roses make a great gift.

The gardening guide is based upon the USDA hardiness zones for Alabama.

The state zones are:
