Caramel Pie

This deliciously rich desert starts with just three simple ingredients and will have your guests begging for more.

Ingredients:
1 Graham Cracker Crust
2 cans of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk

1 container whipped topping

1) Remove labels from cans

2) Place cans in a large, deep pot and fill with water, so cans are completely submerged. Bring to a low boil.

3) Cover pot and boil on low for 3 hours. Add water frequently to make sure cans are completely covered in water. This will keep them from exploding during boiling.

4) Carefully remove cans with tongs.

5) Place cans on towel for about 10 minutes to cool. Do not cool too long or the caramel may set.

6) Carefully open cans. CAUTION: The cans and caramel will be hot.

7) Pour caramel into pie shell and smooth with spatula. (*See Hints below for other additions.)

8) Place in refrigerator or freezer for several hours to set. Top with whipped topping.

Hints:

*For even more flavor, mix caramel, 2 tbs. softened butter, 1 tsp. vanilla and a pinch of salt before pouring into pie shell

*Drizzle with melted caramel or chocolate topping
*Sprinkle nuts on top

*Create several layers with banana slices, caramel and whipped topping for a decadent desert
*Use leftover caramel as a dip for apple slices

           Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is a time of sharing a hearty meal and enjoying special time with family and friends. It is also a day to give thanks for the many blessings we have received over the years, as individuals and as a nation. In honor of this purely American holiday, we would like to share some words of thanks:

Giving Thanks

For the hay and the corn and the wheat that is reaped,

For the labor well done, and the barns that are heaped,
For the sun and the dew and the sweet honeycomb,
For the rose and the song and the harvest brought home --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

For the trade and the skill and the wealth in our land,
For the cunning and strength of the workingman's hand,
For the good that our artists and poets have taught,
For the friendship that hope and affection have brought --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

For the homes that with purest affection are blest,
For the season of plenty and well-deserved rest,
For our country extending from sea unto sea;
The land that is known as the "Land of the Free" --
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

We hope you enjoy great times with family and friends, an abundance of delicious food and some good football this Thanksgiving. If we can be of any assistance to you, please call or stop by. (Remember we'll be closed November 27-30.) Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,
Cahaba Tractor Co.

In-Laws

A couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither wanted to concede their position.

As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the wife sarcastically asked, "Relatives of yours?"

"Yep," the husband replied, "in-laws."

Planting
November
Gardening Guide

Fruits and Nuts:

Mulch strawberries, blackberries and grapes. Begin choosing sites for new plantings. Protect strawberry plants from extreme temperatures.

Vegetable Seed:

Plant cabbage and lettuce in the cold frame. Follow the AL Vegetable Garden Planting Chart for planting dates.

Vegetable Plants:

Continue planting container-grown plants. Water and mulch well.

Annuals and Perennials:
Plant hardy flowering plants like larkspur, poppies, pansies, anchusa and candytuft. Sow sweet peas now.

Bulbs:
Continue spring bulb planting. Place lilies of the valley in shady location.

Roses:
Begin planting roses now. Look for newer varieties when selecting. Use soil test for correct fertilization.

Shrubs:

Plant shrubs, trees and vines. Remove any dead or diseased branches from trees and shrubs.

Lawns:

Overseed lawn to have a green winter lawn. Use proper herbicide to kill germinating winter weeds.

Miscellaneous:

*If houseplants begin dropping leaves, move to sunnier spot near windows. Don't allow leaves to touch window during colder months.

*For privacy on patios or decks, plant screen plantings.

*To kill scale, mites and other insects, continue spraying with oil before first freeze.

*Apply less fertilizer and water to houseplants as growth slows down for winter.
