Will Farmers and Businesses Lose Tax Incentives on Farm Equipment
in 2014?

The answer is yes if the current Senate proposals on tax reform are passed. The major changes that will negatively affect farmers (especially hog, dairy and poultry farmers) and businesses include utilizing the accrual method of accounting. Under the new proposed method of computing depreciation, all non-real estate assets will be placed into one of four "pools" where calculations will be made to determine the depreciation amount. Bonus Depreciation would be eliminated.

What does this mean for farmers and businesses now?

In decades past, farmers and businesses have lowered their tax liability by purchasing machinery and placing it in service before the end of the year then writing the majority of the cost off through accelerated depreciation offered by the Internal Revenue Service. The Accelerated First Year Depreciation or Bonus Depreciation allowance combined with I.R.C. Section 179 allows for an immediate write off of capital expenditures, minimizing taxable income.

Section 179 and Bonus Depreciation offset a significant portion of upfront cash needed for purchasing a new or used tractor and many times offsets the entire down payment. Under the American Taxpayer Relief Act, Section 179 expensing limits were increased up to $500,000 in 2013 and Bonus Depreciation was reinstated to 50% for purchases that exceeded the $2,000,000 cap. This means that small businesses that do not profit in 2013 can use the 50% Bonus Depreciation on new equipment and carry the loss forward to future profitable years.

Current tax proposals will eliminate the Bonus Depreciation altogether. However, Section 179 will be increased to $1,000,000 and extend the $500,000 limit through 2014. The new $1,000,000 limit will then begin in 2015 and be indexed to inflation in $100,000 increments. This is the only good news for farmers and businesses as the current proposed pool amounts will significantly increase self-employment taxes with no further tax depreciations.

What's a farmer and business owner to do?

Tax specialists and business and farm organizations are recommending that farmers or businesses that need to purchase new machinery and want to take advantage of the higher limits in 2013 make those purchases before December 31st. They are also advising that anyone concerned about the new tax changes and how it will affect them consult with a tax professional and are urging everyone to contact their Senator and Representative NOW before these proposals are enacted into law.

Perfectly Pecan Praline Cookies

Reprinted from PaulaDeen.com, these cookies are delicious and easy to make. Yields about four dozen cookies.

Ingredients:

- 1/3 cup sugar

- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 cup toasted pecans, finely chopped, plus 2 tablespoons for sprinkling
- 1 cup butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 4 ounces white chocolate

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Praline:
In a small heavy saucepan over medium heat, stir together constantly the sugar and water. Cook until boiling for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes or until the syrup is golden brown in color. It is important to remove the saucepan from the heat just as the sugar begins to darken to an amber color. Remove from the heat and stir in 1 cup pecans. Carefully pour the hot mixture onto a parchment lined sheet tray. Let cool until completely firm. Transfer to a plastic bag, crush with a rolling pin, and reserve for the cookie dough.

Cookies:
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugars together with a hand mixer. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla extract and beat until combined.

Stir in the flour and baking soda and mix until incorporated. Fold in the reserved crushed praline until combined. Drop 1 tablespoon or a small ice cream scoop of the dough onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until the edges are slightly browned.

While the cookies are baking, melt the chocolate in a double boiler and stir until smooth. When the cookies are done drizzle the white chocolate over the cookies and sprinkle with the chopped pecans.

We appreciate you and are thankful for your business. We hope the New Year brings you much health, wealth and happiness.

Prayer Time

Shortly before Christmas, two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents' house.  At bedtime, the boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs.

"I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE...
I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE...
I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE..."

His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother saying, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf."
To which the little brother replied. "I know, but Gramma is!"

Planting
December
Gardening Guide

Fruits and Nuts:

Plant young pecan and other deciduous fruit trees and grapes. Begin dormant pruning of established fruits. Spray dormant oil for scales.

Annuals and Perennials:
Plant hardy annual seed now. One to try: violas.

Bulbs:

Continue planting spring bulbs.

Roses:

Continue to add plants to rose garden and mulch well.

Shrubs:

With the onset of freezing temps, delay planting
young shrubs.

Lawns:

Spray for lawn weeds like, wild garlic, chickweed, Poa annua, and dandelion, among others.

Miscellaneous:

*Be sure to protect tender plants from freezing temps by covering them or store in a sheltered location.

*Keep debris cleared in flower beds.

*Forget the tie or yet another can opener! Consider giving outdoor shrubs and trees or indoor
plants as gifts this year. They make great, long-lasting gifts that'll put a smile on anyone's face.
