RTV Safety

There's nothing like hopping on your RTV to quickly get around those tight spaces or over terrain that's not quite vehicle-friendly. Whether you RTV for work or play, the most important thing you should always be mindful of is safety. Now is a good time to review some basic safety precautions, especially as we head into hunting season when RTVs are frequently used.

Each year, more than 100,000 people are injured in all terrain vehicle accidents. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 30% of those injured involved children under the age of 16. The latest CPSC reports indicate from 1982-2011 there were 11,688 atv-related deaths.

Kubota RTVs and tractors are built for safe driving. Unlike many other all-terrain vehicles (atv), all Kubota tractors and RTVs are built with the added security of Rollover Protection Structures (ROPS) to keep the vehicle from overturning and protect the driver in the event of an accident. However, Kubota strongly recommends using safety precautions, like wearing seatbelts, at all times to avoid unnecessary accidents.

To stay safe, follow these tips when operating your RTV:

** Know your vehicle. Read the manual for proper procedures on operating your RTV.

** Pre-inspect your RTV before using. Check all oils and fluids, including brake fluids.
** Wear your seatbelt...ALWAYS.

** Be aware of the terrain. Use special caution and driving techniques when climbing or driving down excessively steep slopes or unstable rocky ground.

Improper driving in these conditions can cause your vehicle to sideturn or crash.

** Do not overload your RTV. Know the weight limits and be sure the weight is evenly distributed.
** Watch your speed at all times, especially when making turns in your vehicle.

** Always carry your cellphone or handheld radio when operating your RTV. Be sure not to use them while driving.

** Never run your RTV in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area.

** Do not allow children or inexperienced drivers to operate the vehicle.

Kubota Corporation is committed to the safety and security of all their customers. The 10 Commandments of Tractor Safety listed on the Kubota website offers additional precautions for safely operating your Kubota equipment. The company also supports The Progressive Agriculture Foundation which provides education and training to make farm, ranch and rural life safer and healthier for children and their families. The program offers training days in all areas of the country. For more information, visit the 2013 Progressive Agriculture Safety Days

Venison Bacon Cheeseburgers

There is no food more fundamental to this nation than a haunch of venison. But there's more to venison than a mouthful of healthy protein. There are qualities to deer meat that can only resonate with the person who's shopped for groceries with a finger on the trigger. Killing a deer is a kind of acceptance of the interconnectedness of life. Dragging a deer from the woods is sweaty work, but work salted with the knowledge that your family will say grace over your efforts for a year or better.

(Excerpt taken from an article by T. Edward Nickens, A Brief History of Venison (And Why You Should Eat It), fieldandstream.com, October 1, 2009)

Ingredients:

- 6 slices bacon, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 2 shallots, minced
- 2 pounds ground venison
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 6 hamburger buns

Directions:

1. Cook bacon in a skillet over medium heat until browned and crispy. Pour bacon and grease into a heatproof bowl and allow to cool. Heat olive oil in skillet then add garlic and shallots. Cook and stir until softened, about three minutes, then add to bacon.

2. Once cool, mix in venison, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, salt, pepper, and egg until evenly combined. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.

3. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat.

4. Shape the mixture into 6 patties and grill to desired doneness. Serve on toasted hamburger buns with your favorite toppings.

                              All Aboard!

The Pumpkin Patch Express rides again this year. Cahaba Tractor hopped on board for the fourth straight year by providing a tractor for the hayride at the annual Calera event.

Presented by the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum,

the family-friendly outing begins at the museum with a quick train ride to visit the Great Pumpkin and enjoy the many activities offered for both young and old. Little ones can jump around in the inflatable jumphouse, dig for treasure in the large sandbox or find their way through the corn husk maze. There's also
coloring and bubble stations, as well as games and hula hoops. Adults can stroll on over to the wine tasting table courtesy of the Ozan Winery.

Drinks and snacks, like the famous freshly boiled peanuts, are available for purchase. For a $5 fee, riders can select the perfect pumpkin from hundreds in the field. A host of dedicated volunteers are readily available to make the day a memorable one.

The Pumpkin Patch Express runs every Saturday through Sunday until October 27.

For more information about other Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum events, to schedule a private event or to volunteer, visit the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum website.

 Good Firemen

A fire started in a pasture near a farm in eastern North Carolina. The fire department from a nearby city was called to put out the fire. The fire proved to be more than the city fire department could handle, so someone suggested that a rural volunteer fire department be called. Though there was doubt they could be of any assistance, the call was made.

Five minutes later, the volunteer fire department arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They drove straight towards the fire and stopped in the middle of the flames. The volunteer firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon, they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two, easily controllable parts.

The farmer was impressed with the volunteer fire department's work and so grateful that his farm had been spared. The next day he presented the volunteer fire department with a check for $1000.

A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds. "That should be obvious," responded the captain. "The first thing we're gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that there fire truck."
