Frederick County Public Libraries
Greetings!

As spring nears, your local library is a great place to explore new technology, new books, and new ideas. Whether you're visiting the library to get lost in a good book or to learn something new, we have something for everyone to enjoy. With your library card you can check out an ebook from Hoopla, download a digital magazine with Flipster, and advance your skills and knowledge with Lynda.com.

We're excited to announce the addition of Beanstack to FCPL's Reading Resources. Beanstack is an easy-to-use interactive reading resource for children and their families. We encourage you to sign up and try it today.

Children can also explore science, technology, engineering, and math in our STEM Labs, and teens are invited to "Create It At Your Library!" from March 6 - 12 during Teen Tech Week.

The Frederick Speaker Series continues this month as we welcome Henry Winkler and Marlee Matlin to the Weinberg Center on March 10. For more information visit frederickspeakerseries.org.

In the event that this newsletter was forwarded to you by a friend and you would like to continue to receive information about library programs, services, and events, we invite you to sign up here for our email newsletter.

Together on stage, Henry and Marlee entertain audiences with their intimate dialogue and personal anecdotes which provide inspiration about overcoming adversity and believing in oneself.

Bryan Stevenson is world-renowned as a visionary legal mind and strong advocate for social justice, working tirelessly as a leader in the movement against mass incarceration. Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu called him, "America's young Nelson Mandela." Stevenson is a MacArthur fellow and creator of the Equal Justice Initiative. His TED talk on injustice was named one of The New Yorker's five essential TED talks and he was also named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2015. He recently served on President Obama's task force on 21st century policing.

George Takei has over ten million followers on social media and is the #1 most- influential person on Facebook. He weighs in on everything from politics to pop culture. Takei's career, which spans 50 years, began with his role as Lt. Sulu on Star Trek. His story takes on additional depth when you learn that his childhood was spent in a Japanese internment camp during WWII, alongside his family. CELTIC CONCERT
Wowing audiences all over the world with their seasoned brand of Celtic music, Dervish has risen to the top of their genre over the past ten years. They've shared the stage with popular acts like REM, Sting, and Britney Spears in front of a crowd of 250,000 at Brazil's Rock in Rio music festival, the first Irish band to perform at this event. Dervish has toured the world including Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Israel, Switzerland, Sweden, and Greece, as well as their native Irish homeland and have proven that they deserve the reputation they've earned as one of the best Irish bands playing today.

This free and family-friendly event, underwritten by the C. Burr Artz Trust and Plamondon Hospitality Partners, is presented annually by the Emmitsburg and Thurmont libraries with special thanks to the Friends of the Thurmont and Emmitsburg libraries.

Each week Beanstack will send you a book recommendation based on your child's age, interests, and reading level. Each weekly e-mail includes a learning tip for the recommended book and information about programs going on at your local library.

Visit fcpl.beanstack.org and create your account. Simply enter your child's first name, age, and interests to receive your first recommendation from Beanstack. All of Beanstack's recommendations are books that are part of FCPL's collection, and the e-mail provides an easy link to the catalog so you can request the book. SCHOOL SKILLS FOR PRESCHOOLERS
IS YOUR PRESCHOOLER READY FOR KINDERGARTEN?
Visit the Brunswick Library this spring for a new series of programs, School Skills for Preschoolers. During each session preschoolers will be given the opportunity to explore important skills such as cutting, tracing, and writing in a fun, interactive environment.

The five years leading up to the first day of kindergarten are critical to a child's future success. According to the Maryland State Department of Education, it is during this time that "the brain develops more rapidly than at any other point in life." By focusing on kindergarten readiness, the library hopes to encourage children toward future academic success and a dedication to lifelong learning.
Young child practices writing skills.
School Skills for Preschoolers will take place on the following Wednesdays (after Preschool Storytime) from 11:15-11:45am.
The Brunswick Library also offers a weekly storytime specifically for preschoolers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am. For more information visit us online at fcpl.org or contact the Brunswick Library at (301)600-7255.
