Frederick County Public Libraries
Greetings!

Welcome to your summer vacation! In between swimming, traveling with your family, and sleeping in, stop by your local library for lots of fun activities to keep you entertained and to keep those hard-earned skills sharp while you're out of school.

If you've ever thought about becoming the next great American novelist our Camp NaNoWriMo Teen Writing Workshops at the C. Burr Artz Public Library might be just the thing for you! You can learn how to write a novel in a month every Tuesday in July at 4:00pm.

If science and math are more your speed we also offer STEM Lab open hours just for teens every other Tuesday from 4:00-6:00pm and we have three new STEM Labs opening at the Brunswick, Thurmont, and Urbana Libraries! To complete the Summer of Wonder STEM Hero Challenge attend two STEM programs at any of our eight library branches this summer.

As always, our Teen Zones have plenty of books, digital content, movies, and magazines that make reading and relaxing even better. Happy summer and we hope to see you soon at your local library!

SUMMER OF WONDER
EVERY HERO HAS A STORY

Our Summer Reading Program has gotten a makeover this year, including a new name. Celebrate a Summer of Wonder with us at FCPL and in your community! This year's theme is Every Hero Has a Story, and we want to hear your story! Kids, teens, and adults can register online at fcpl.org/summer or at their local library.

Every hero needs a sidekick and we've found lots of sidekicks to help make the Summer of Wonder extra special. Attend programs led by our Community Sidekicks and learn everything from self-defense to coding

Along with a new name and new programs, there's also a brand new way to play the Summer Reading game. Participate online at fcpl.org/summer and complete challenges throughout the summer including attending library programs or special community events. See a Summer of Wonder sign at a local business? Look for the special Summer of Wonder code phrase and enter it online for points! Complete 16 challenges to finish the program or keep the fun going by completing 17 or more challenges for a chance to win a Superhero Prize Pack!

Keep track of what you read to build your own superhero avatar at fcpl.org/summer and use the suggested booklists created by FCPL, Frederick County Public Schools, and The Curious Iguana to find your next great read!

CAMP NaNoWriMo
A MONTH LONG WRITING ADVENTURE
National Novel Writing Month challenges teens in grades 6 and up to banish their inner editor for the entire month of July! Teens are encouraged to complete a writing project, such as a short story, novel, collection of poems or memoir, and will receive help through weekly workshops at the C. Burr Artz Public Library.

Workshops are designed to help teens develop their writing skills and give them a safe place to brainstorm with other budding teen writers.

Join us for this month long adventure at 4pm on Tuesday in July! On July 21 guest author, Deb Schepp, will discuss the ins and outs of the publishing world and answer questions from our Camp NaNoWriMo participants. Spaces are limited. Register online at fcpl.org or by calling (301)600-1630.

NERD PROM
AT URBANA REGIONAL LIBRARY
Since Urbana Regional Library opened the Teen Anime & Manga Group has been an enthusiastic bunch. The group meets monthly, one Sunday a month from 2:00-3:30pm. Many group members cosplay and dress as their favorite manga character. The detail that goes into these costumes is amazing! Others bring manga, plushies, and other favorite items. There are also budding artists and fan experts in the group. All middle and high school age students are welcome! Watch anime and music videos on the big screen in the Community Room, and have your picture taken for our "Wall of Fame" located on the second floor glass wall near the graphic novels.

Last summer the Teen Anime & Manga Group organized an amazing Nerd Prom and Nerd Prom is back again for its second year! It's definitely not your average prom. Attendees dress in prom attire or cosplay. Look for music, dancing, new friends, photo shoots and refreshments at this year's Nerd Prom on Sunday, July 19th, from 2:00-3:30pm at the Urbana Regional Library. Questions? Call Ms. Foltz at (301)600-7004. See you there!
