SUMMER READING PROGRAM
2014
Frederick County Public Libraries
Greetings!

Summer's in the rear-view mirror and the kids are back in school. There's still a tremendous buzz at the library as kids visit our branches and website for homework help, project ideas, and research.

Our programs for children and teens are an integral part of our library services all year long, and we couldn't provide them without the support of the community. As we reflect back on over 9,000 children who benefited from the Summer Reading Program, we're pleased to provide this brief report on the events that made this past summer special for Frederick County youth.

If you would like to continue to receive information about library programs, services, and events, we invite you to sign up for our email newsletter.

Sincerely,

SUMMER READING 2014 FIZZES AND POPS WITH EXCITEMENT Sneaks visits Harry Grove Stadium.

Summer Reading is over and we hope you had a great time reading, learning, and attending library programs! We had 9,479 children and teens read their way through the summer to accomplish their reading goals. Our busy readers submitted 7,788 reviews of the books they read to our website! Finally, we had 332 patrons complete our passport activity, resulting in 2,656 additional visits to Frederick County Public Libraries. If you consider that the distance to travel to each of our eight libraries is 100 miles, that means our passport participants drove a combined distance of 26,560 miles this summer. Frederick County residents are truly passionate about their libraries!

We are very proud of all the kids and teens who participated in the reading program. While our Summer Reading Program is a fun way to earn great prizes, recent research has shown that it combats summer learning loss and improves student test scores and reading levels. Every summer kids can improve their reading skills while having fun, and each year Frederick County Public Libraries staff develop a wide range of exciting and free activities around a different theme to help kids enjoy reading. Next year's theme will be "Every Hero Has a Story." Stay tuned for more information about Summer Reading 2015.

As pleased as we are with the many families who participated this year, we are equally appreciative of the many sponsors and volunteers who helped pull off another successful summer of reading. We would like to thank our sponsors for all of their support this summer: PNC Bank, The Frederick News-Post, Westview Promenade and the Friends of the Frederick County Public Libraries. It is a pleasure to work with a community that readily offers sponsorships and volunteers that keep us all reading.

See you next summer!

PASSPORT TO READING PROGRAM!

This year's Summer Reading Program included a program created specifically for Frederick County students and their parents. The Passport to Reading program--included on the gameboards--featured a Frederick County map with all eight FCPL branches clearly marked. Families were invited to visit each of the eight library branches, receiving an individualized stamp from staff at each location. Those participants who completed their journeys between May 1 and August 9 were entered into a special prize drawing for some wonderful treats.

332 youngsters from babies through rising college freshmen, returned their completed passports. Eight of these lucky participants won a prize package that included a PNC gift card, FCPL backpack, four tickets to the Maryland Science Center, and a baseball signed by the Frederick Keys!

Encouraging our readers to visit all of our branches in the library system afforded families the opportunity to see the differences among our branches. Each of our branches reflects the community in which it operates, and each has its own distinct personality. Of course, all branches offer a fabulous collection of books and other materials to borrow, and each branch offers a great variety of programs for children from birth through high school. Passport to Reading was such a success this summer, that children's and teen staff are busy planning other exciting games for next year.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES

This summer the Baltimore Orioles generously donated 320 tickets to Frederick County Public Libraries for their August 1 and August 3 games against the Seattle Mariners at Camden Yards. Families from all over Frederick County and the state of Maryland enjoyed an evening at the stadium.

One lucky winner, Matthew C., participated in the Field Ceremony at the game. Matthew and other summer readers from across Maryland participated in the field ceremony celebrating Summer Readers.
