Sheree's memories of 25 years...

When we bought Duck Bay Lodge in 1988, I looked forward to leaving my stressful job with the provincial government.  I quickly realized tourism has its share of stress too.

I appreciate the many compliments we receive about our meals.  But I will tell you that some of my most stressful, and embarrassing, moments have been with cooking. One of the memorable ones was when I was learning to cook on the smoker.  I took the pork loin off the smoker, let it rest and started to slice it just moments before serving at 6 p.m.  It was extremely dry and overdone.  We started basting it with marinade to try to moisten it, went into the dining room to apologize for what we were serving and opened bottles of wine to help the guests wash it down.  The guests were so wonderful - one table sent their platter back for seconds, others said the flavor was delicious.

Then there was the night that we discovered, as we were dishing out the entree, that there were 19 stuffed pork chops and 20 guests.  The butcher always packaged the chops five per package, we never thought to double check.  Believe me, we now triple count the meat, every single time!

What amazes me about the last 25 years is that some of our guests have been with us since our first year in business.  Over time, they have brought three generations of their family up.  What a privilege to watch their family grow up and be a small part of their vacation memories.

I am so grateful for the generous way our guests extend their friendship and loyalty.  It is truly the best part of owning Duck Bay.
