Do you know what "Boxing Day" is?

Boxing Day Dinner

We always find it interesting that, although Canada and the U.S. share a 5,525 mile border, a common language and many other attributes, there are still subtle differences between the two countries. One of them is our tradition of "Boxing Day".

Because of Canada's ties to Britain, some of the customs of the "old country" remain.  In Britain it was the tradition of the wealthiest families to have lavish Christmas day celebrations, requiring their household staff to work.  After Christmas dinner, the leftovers were "boxed up" .  The household staff was given December 26th off to celebrate Christmas with their families and enjoy the boxed leftovers from their employers, as well as other gifts.

Like Christmas, Boxing Day is a public holiday (non-working day) in Canada and Britain. Since most of us in Canada don't have a household staff, Boxing Day is now traditionally spent snapping up the after-Christmas clearance deals at the stores or watching college football.
