This month we are happy to highlight The Chandler School in Greenville SC. Located in the C. Granville Wyche House on Augusta Road, the Chandler School was founded in 2012 by Dana Blackhurst. Blackhurst, a native of Greenville, felt the need to bring a school such as Chandler to this city. Dyslexic himself with an impressive resume in education The Chandler School was a no brainer. The school serves students in grades K-8. It's mission is to equip students of average to above average intelligence, who have language-based learning differences, reach their academic goals, and to provide and prepare them for their future education. The school specializes in assisting children who have difficulties in reading, writing, and math, specifically due to dyslexia and/or ADHD.
Chandler aims to make each student a confident, self-directed, and lifelong learner. With a low faculty-student ratio, they are able to execute an individually tailored curriculum focused on a multisensory approach: see it, make it, do it. Chandler strives to build an environment where students feel safe to fail. At this school, "failure"is not a negative because in a safe environment it promotes learning and growth. At Chandler they want their students to enjoy the learning process, celebrating both failures and successes. They stress internal and external organization; utilizing organizational tools such as notebook systems and homeroom classes to assist in student learning. At The Chandler School organization is the key to student success.
Since 2012 The Chandler School has grown from one student in it's inaugural year to 27 enrolled this year, with an aim to cap the admissions at 30 students. There is truly a special feeling when you walk around the Chandler campus. The parents, faculty, students, and even board members are a family that work together to get the job done. More importantly, the students are happy because each day their educational needs are being met.
