Happy New Year!

The start of 2014 is a great time to make a pledge to improve your well-being, but  sticking to those resolutions throughout the year can be challenging. As you think about your health goals for 2014, consider using SMART Goals to help you along the way. Setting goals that are SMART, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Based, can help you begin the year with small, easy-to-do changes that can produce big rewards.

As one of the nation's leading nonprofits for healthy living, the Y improves health and well-being by helping people be healthy in spirit, mind, and body.

To learn more about how the Y can help you achieve your well-being goals, connect with a Wellness Coach.

Learn more about setting Smart
Goals and adopting tips that can help you have a successful 2014:

S Specific: Make specific goals to help you stay focused and committed. If your goal is to floss more often, resolve to floss before bed each night.

M Measurable: Choose a goal that you can measure and track. If you commit to drinking eight glasses of water a day, use a journal or smart phone to keep track throughout your day.

A Attainable: Start with a simple goal and build on your progress as you're able. If you want to reduce sugar in your diet, limit yourself to eating one sweet a day. When you're up for it, decrease it to one every other day.

R Realistic: Pick a goal that fits into your daily routine and won't overwhelm you. If your goal is to get more sleep, commit to going to bed by 11pm on work nights.

T TIME-BASED: Give yourself a deadline to achieve milestones. If you want to run a 5k race, work up to it by setting goals to run one day per week for three months and then two days per week for the next three months.
rTHE Y. SO MUCH MORE. Annual Campaign

As this community's oldest not for profit we make financial assistance available as part of our charitable mission to the community. This is made possible through the generous contributions of community-minded members, staff, friends and family.

Each year we focus on raising the necessary funds to continue vital programs such as Membership For All giving everyone a safe place to learn, grow and thrive. We kick off our annual campaign this year January 31 and will conclude on March 14. Our goal is raise $515,000 and we know we can be successful with the help of our friends, neighbors, members and dedicated volunteers. To learn more, contact Bev Reed, VP of Financial Development at breed@ymcaspokane.org or 777 YMCA (9622). If you would like to make a monthly pledge, consider adding a few dollars to your monthly membership draft, pledge with a debit or credit card, or make a one-time gift, visit firstgiving or our website.

From A to Z, we offer a variety of experiences to nurture the potential of every child and teen, improve the nation's health and well-being and provide support to our neighbors. Throughout our community, countless people know the YMCA. But the Y is so much more than a gym. It's a cause, dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

From exercise to education, form volleyball to volunteerism, from preschool to preventative health, the Y doesn't just strengthen our bodies. It strengthens our community.

Our  community faces new challenges that create a greater need than ever for the work we do every day. Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers and staff to make a difference.

Every gift makes a difference.

Everyone has a role to play.

Together, we can achieve so much more.

Please give today.

IMPACT IN ACTION:
Bette Monahan

A bystander no longer Bette is now an active participant in life!

Bette's journey with LIVESTRONG at the YMCA began when her oncologist recommended the program to her following her cancer treatment. Never an avid exerciser, she was hesitant but knew that exercise would significantly reduce her joint pain from her treatment medicine. The day she took her first dose she pulled on her tennis shoes and walked a mile! Pretty big accomplishment for Bette who preferred sitting and reading a good book or watching a TV program to hitting the gym. And she felt better! So the next day she called and talked with our specially trained LIVESTRONG coach to determine if the program was right for her. And the rest is history!

We feel a little sad for Bette as she says she doesn't have much time to read anymore because she is so busy with life; she joined a fly fishing club, pushed herself to climb a rock wall, zip-lined and works out seven days a week! Betty had this to share about how LIVESTRONG at the YMCA changed her life:

"I used to live in fear. Now my friends say I'm fearless!"

She is an inspiration to us and is just one amazing example of the many wonderful journeys experienced through the
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the Y.

Thank You Zumiez

Every year, we receive an unsolicited shipment of warm clothes and blankets from the Zumiez Foundation.  We have the honor of distributing the coats, hats, gloves, socks, sweatshirts and blankets to those in need in our community.  This year, we were able to provide warmth to over 45 families, agencies and schools.

We want to send a special thank you to Zumiez and to all of the staff and volunteers that helped with the distribution event on December 11that the Central YMCA.  We were amazed that everything was gone within 19 minutes of when the doors opened.  Never has it been so obvious to us that there are more families in need right outside our doors than we could ever imagine.
