The YMCA of the Inland Northwest is host to the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). RSVP of Spokane County promotes senior volunteer opportunities to build a stronger community through partnerships that impact community needs.
While RSVP works on many projects, Project Warm-Up is one that lasts year round and is supported by people of all ages. In 2013, over 200 volunteers ranging in age from 8 to 98 provided their time and talent to make over 7,800 items for distribution to 48 agencies in Spokane County. The distribution usually occurs during November, in time to help prevent hypothermia for members of the community who receive these gifts of love and caring.
A special thank you goes out to all the volunteers including the knitting club at Lewis and Clark High School who donated hundreds of items this year alone. We also want to thank The Avista Foundation for their generous grant which provides yarn at no cost to our many volunteers.
If you are interested in donating supplies or your talent, please contact Teri Wallace by phone at 509 344 7787 or by email. |

The YMCA Homework Club at Mountainside Middle School is leading the entire school in a giving campaign for the holiday season. They have teamed up with Generation Alive, a program founded by Professional Baseball Pitcher Jeremy Affeldt, to give youth the opportunity to show compassion for others. An all School Assembly was held on November 22 to kick off the Something2Eat Campaign. A Quarter Drive will collect change, bracelets and t-shirts will be available to purchase, and photos with Santa will help raise funds. All proceeds will be used to purchase food to pack a meal for six. For more information, go to GenerationAlive.com. |
The American Cancer Society (ASC) has selected YMCA Camp Reed to continue providing the best week of summer for children and their siblings living with cancer. In March, the National Office of the American Cancer Society announced it will no longer fund camps across the nation, including the local chapter known as Camp Goodtimes - East. This change was made in order for the American Cancer Society to direct funds toward their key mission of cancer research. Thanks to broad based community support and the YMCA of the Inland Northwest, Camp Goodtimes will continue providing a medically supervised, weeklong camp for children battling the effects of cancer. YMCA Camp Reed was the original host site of Camp Goodtimes, successfully hosting it for twenty years.
"This collaboration with the American Cancer Society creates a win-win for our community and speaks volumes about the collaborative spirit that exists among community leaders and organizations," said Steve Tammaro, President/CEO of the YMCA of the Inland Northwest.
The continuation of care from ACS to the YMCA has garnered wide-ranging community support including Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane, Coaches vs. Cancer (Mark and Marcy Few), Cancer Care Northwest, Rockwood Clinic, Providence Health Care and other community leaders. The YMCA of the Inland Northwest and supporters will ensure the local, free-of-charge camp will continue for local children fighting cancer in 2014 and beyond.
