We believe everyone should have the opportunity to be healthy in spirit, mind and body. Well-being is nurtured by supportive relationships and environments which help you achieve that goal.
They Say the Y Matters: KXLY

The KXLY Broadcast Group is a multimedia broadcasting company consisting of the following television and radio stations:KXLY ABC 4 (KXLY 4.1 ABC digital) and MeTV (KXLY 4.2 digital), KHTQ - Rock 94 1/2, KZZU - 92.9 ZZU, KXLY FM - The Big 99.9 Coyote Country, KEZE - Hot 96.9, KXLY AM - KXLY Newsradio 920, KVNI - 1080 ESPN, and KXLX - 700 ESPN.

KXLY employees are a very creative group so it's important to come up with creative ways to promote employee health and wellness. Many employees stay active by taking advantage of the YMCA corporate membership KXLY offers. The Y membership, coupled with fun workplace fitness programs, keep employees excited about maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Our most recent fitness program, the "Fit Club 5,000 Charity Challenge," challenged employees to track the miles they ran, walked, cycled or swam for a 3-month period. If the Fit Club members were able to reach 5,000 miles collectively, KXLY agreed to make a donation to a local charity voted on by the Fit Club. KXLY employees, being the competitive and generous folks that they are, surpassed their goal and racked up a total of 8,100 miles! It was an amazing accomplishment for our employees and our community!KXLY

"I have been a member of this gym since it opened in 2009, I was actually part of the KXLY4 crew that came out and did a live showing of the facility for the grand opening! From that day forward I knew this was the gym for me. The clean, friendly atmosphere is very inviting and makes workouts that much easier. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about how to safely exercise and will go out of their way to explain every piece of equipment if that's what you need. I have been a part of other fitness centers that seem to only have members with 6 pack abs and bulging biceps. I like that at the YMCA you will see people from all walks of life with different goals in mind, not everyone is training to become a world class athlete and that's okay! I've also noticed my workouts have a positive effect on not only my body but my mind and spirit as well. I always feel great and as if I have accomplished something after I leave the Y. I can't imagine being part of any other gym."

"There is nothing better then getting out to rock-climb, mountain bike, snowboard and yes, hit a few golf balls around the course. The YMCA fits perfectly into my active lifestyle. Friendly faces and helpful staff make it easy to get in and make the most of my workouts so I can get right back outside.

Trips to the YMCA keep me focused on staying healthy and having the energy to explore the world around me. Call it a bonus to see co-workers sharing my drive to stay healthy. Any motivation helps when you know Froyo down the street keeps calling your name."

The YMCA is Honored to Support Those Who Serve Our Country

The YMCA provides three types of membership for those in our military: Corporate Memberships, the Military Outreach Initiative and the Retired Military & Veterans program.

Corporate Membership and Retired Military and Veterans receive 50% off the joiner fee and 10% off the monthly draft with military ID or DD214. We currently serve 147 military corporate memberships and 133 retired military and veterans' memberships.

In 2008, the Department of Defense extended $31 million in government funding for military families to receive free YMCA memberships at facilities throughout the nation. This Military Outreach Initiative is a partnership with YMCA of the USA and Armed Services YMCA and is effective through Feb 15, 2014. More than 240 families have been served through this program and we hope the Department of Defense will choose to extend funding for a new contract in 2014 in order to maintain support to military and their families.

Tips for Children and Families of the Military

  1. Avoid the Countdown: Try not to focus on the expected homecoming date of a loved one serving overseas as these dates can change. Instead, emphasize how mom or dad will be home once the work is done.
  2. Give a Geography Lesson: Use maps and books to learn more about the place or region where the parent is stationed to empower children and provide some comfort.
  3. Family Ties that Bind: Help children stay connected during separation by building holiday care packages and taking advantage of services like United Through Reading that videotapes a parent reading their child's favorite book or the Armed Services YMCA's Operation Kid Comfort program that provides a personally handcrafted quilt or pillow.
  4. Monitor the Media: News stories can scare or alarm children, keep an eye on their media exposure and be prepared to answer questions prompted by what they see and hear.
  5. Take Advantage of the Internet: Use Facebook, Skype and other chat services to keep in touch with the parent in real-time. This lets children know their parent is safe while providing important bonding time.
  6. Find Time for You: When a loved one is away, the remaining caregiver takes on the full family responsibilities. This can be stressful, and many Ys offer free memberships through the Military Outreach Initiative.

Remember to thank a Veteran on November 11th for their service!

Impact In Action:
DeArmond Family
DeArmond Family

Our family is incredibly thankful for the partnership between the YMCA and the US Armed Forces. Through the military outreach program at the YMCA of the Inland Northwest, my family is able to enjoy the many programs available to the local community.

We especially enjoy the swim lessons, group exercise classes, family swim time, and the wonderful and caring employees in Child Watch. Ensuring that my entire family can remain happy and healthy is very important and the YMCA has been at the heart of our experience while stationed in Spokane.

Without this program in support of military families who are unable to access on post/base fitness centers easily, we would have had to drive 30 min out of town to the local Air Force base. My family is able to spend more quality time together because we are not spending time in the car away from activities we enjoy doing together.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA Gives Cancer Survivors New Freedom to Live

A bystander no longer Bette is now an active participant in life!

"I used to live in fear. Now my friends say I'm fearless!"

Bette's journey with LIVESTRONG at the YMCA began when her oncologist recommended the program to her following her cancer treatment. Never an avid exerciser, she was hesitant but knew that exercise would significantly reduce her joint pain from her treatment medicine. The day she took her first dose she pulled on her tennis shoes and walked a mile! Pretty big accomplishment for Bette who preferred sitting and reading a good book or watching a TV program to hitting the gym. And she felt better! So the next day she called and talked with our specially trained LIVESTRONG coach to determine if the program was right for her. And the rest is history!

We feel a little sad for Bette as she says she doesn't have much time to read anymore because she is so busy with life; she joined a fly fishing club, pushed herself to climb a rock wall, zip-lined and works out seven days a week! She is an inspiration to us and is just one amazing example of the many wonderful journeys experienced through the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the Y.

You Can Change the Future

One common thread between some of the most successful companies in the country is a fanatical dedication to customer service. They know the answer to the question, "Would you recommend us to your friends and family?"

As CEO of the YMCA of the Inland Northwest I want to ask you, our member and customer, that and other questions in the coming months. Cardio 101:
The Basics of Running

Keys for Success on the Road or Treadmill

(courtesy of LIVESTRONG.org)

T
o many, running is straightforward. Just put one foot in front of the other, then repeat quickly - right? Not so fast. As anyone who's laced up can attest, running is simple only until you actually start doing it. Once you hit the road or hop on a treadmill, questions begin to pop up: How long should I go? Is walking OK? Am I  wearing the right shoes?

The answers matter. Running torches calories, strengthens your heart and lungs, and releases feel-good endorphins. But, it can also take a toll on your body and lead to injury if you don't follow the rules. Click below to read through 5 simple steps on how to start running correctly.

First Steps

If you've never run before, don't worry, because the best way to begin running is to walk. "Walking strengthens the muscles and tendons so your body can handle running's impact," said Andrew Kastor, head coach of the High Sierra Striders in Mammoth Lakes, California.

Don't rush this adjustment phase. One of the biggest mistakes new runners make is thinking that all cardio is the same, and if you've strengthened your heart and lungs with one activity, you'll be fit enough to jump right in to another.
