What's Been Happening
Kids Xtreme Fun Run - On July 13th at the North YMCA, kids of all ages trudged, jumped and swam their way through our 500 yard obstacle course fun run. We had 37 racers, as well as a number of parents cheering and supporting the kids as they ran the course. A special thank you goes out to our volunteers and to Yokes, Target and Aslin Finch for your donations.

International Mud Day happened on June 29th, but with the recent heat we decided any day can be fun with mud and water in our Early Child Care Center. The kids had a blast and even some of our teachers got in on the fun!

The YMCA & Act Six

On July 1st, the YMCA welcomed Alyson Atwater and the Act Six Program to the Y. Act Six is a leadership and scholarship initiative providing full-tuition, full-need scholarships to Gonzaga and Whitworth, as well as training and support to the scholars throughout their college careers.

Act Six is in its 11th year, starting at Whitworth and expanding to multiple universities around the Northwest. The YMCA of the Inland Northwest is now the Spokane affiliate for the program, providing local support in recruitment, selection and collaboration with our partner colleges.

Steve Tammaro, President and CEO of the YMCA, states "The partnership between the YMCA and Whitworth and Gonzaga Universities is yet another example of great mission-focused organizations coming together for the betterment of the community.  Act Six is not just about education but about creating leaders who will benefit our community for years to come."

"Since 2009, Act Six has selected 54 scholars for Whitworth and Gonzaga with 95% of those still enrolled or graduates," states Tim Herron, Act Six Founder. Launched in 2002 by the Northwest Leadership Foundation in Tacoma, Act Six seeks to develop leaders to be agents of transformation on campus and in their home communities.

Since the program's inception, 45 cohorts of ethnically diverse and mostly first-generation, low-income Act Six scholars from Tacoma, Seattle, Portland, Spokane, and the Yakima Valley have enrolled at eight Northwest universities.

For more information on Act Six or to nominate someone who might qualify (high school seniors or up to 2 years out of high school and enrolled in a local community college) visit actsix.org or contact Alyson at aatwater@ymcaspokane.org. The application is available online and is due Oct. 29

Summer Day Camp Survey
Thank you for your participation in the YMCA Summer Day Camp programs! With a presence in thousands of communities across the nation, the Y works every day to make sure everyone we serve has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive - and as a parent of a youth program participant at the Y, we would love your perspective on how we're doing.

We have created an online survey designed specifically for parents of youth program participants.  It will only take you a few minutes to complete, and it is completely confidential and anonymous. Sharing your experience as a parent of a child in a Y program will enable us to learn what is important to you and your child.

If you provided us with an email address when you registered your child for a Y program, you will be receiving an email on August 23, 2013 with a link to the survey that you can complete online. All surveys must be completed by September 13, 2013 to be included.

We hope you will take a few moments to share your personal Y experience with us -- the highlights as well as the opportunities we have to improve our support of your goals. If you need assistance please do not hesitate to speak with me or any member of our YMCA staff team. We thank you in advance for your time and thoughts.

A Special Thanks To The U.S. Bank Foundation
We are pleased to announce that the U.S. Bank Foundation has approved two grants to the YMCA. First is $2,750 for the Youth Investment Program and the second is $5,000 for Outside the Box.

The Youth Investment Program's guiding beliefs are that every young person can become a successful, contributing member of our society; that the cycle of hopelessness is broken as young people begin to realize they can change their lives for the better; that encouraging a strong work ethic will enable young people to develop self-respect, dignity, and hope for the future; and that as a community, we must model compassion and vision for all. For more information contact Jesse Richner at 777 YMCA (9622) x 215 or jrichner@ymcaspokane.org

The Outside the Box program gives freshmen and sophomore students the tools to have a positive and successful high school experience. Homework help, community building activities, and social skills are only a few of the benefits gained by participants. Teens have a chance to improve the high school experience by working with a positive adult mentor. Note: This program is only available to North Central High School Students. For more information contact Jenny Jamison at 777 YMCA (9622) x 115 or jjamison@ymcaspokane.org
