BOBfest 2013 Recap

This year's BOBfest event marks another successful year as we had a total of 8 high school bands from around the region that competed in the 16th annual Battle of the Bands at Riverfront Park's Clocktower.

This year's winner was "Acuff and Sherfey" a country duo from Coeur D Alene, Idaho. They received a full day of free recording from Amplified Wax Recording Studios, as well as a $250 gift card from Hoffman music.

This country duo was also awarded a gig during "Pig out in the Park" where they will be playing on a stage in Riverfront park!

It took many sponsors to make this event such a success this year, and we would like to send special thank you's to: Hoffman music, Chase Youth Foundation, Silhouette Lighting, Charlotte Martin Foundation, Element 79, Amplified Wax Recording Studio and all the volunteers that helped make this event so successful!

All In On Summer Produce!
Summer produce is at its peak, so why not make July all about fresh fruits and vegetables for you and your family. Even if you don't consider yourself much of a cook, summer fruits and vegetables lend themselves to easy preparation and assembly.

Fun options include Kabobs - sweet (blueberries, peaches and melon) or zesty (peppers, onions, eggplant, zucchini); homemade slaws using cabbage, broccoli and beets; or lightly grilled fruits and veggies like pineapple, green beans and corn.

Summer foods to be on the lookout for:

Aim for a variety of colors. Fruits and vegetables that are naturally bright in color are a great source of vitamins and minerals. These vibrant colors indicate a healthier choice and brighten up meals.

Veggies in Peak Season this July:

Beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, radishes, rhubarb, sweet corn, cucumber, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, onions & tomatoes

Fruits in Peak Season in July:

Apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, melons, peaches, raspberries & watermelon
My Y Story:
Desiree Lancaster

For Desiree Lancaster, the YWCA and YMCA have played different yet important roles in her life. During her toughest times, the YWCA was there for her. "I was married 8 years to an abusive man who beat me down verbally and physically."

Once her divorce and permanent protection order was finalized, she decided to work on healing herself and her 4 girls. "I started visiting the YMCA for TRX, Cycling and Zumba classes - I really enjoyed the classes but never really felt at home."

Then one day, Desiree noticed an instructor who was always so friendly to everyone - Wende Jones. "I watched her welcome each and every one who attended her classes - it was so encouraging. All I can say is she is the spirit of what the YMCA's mission is!

Desiree started attending Wende's Core Ball and Intense Pump classes, and quickly felt more at home. "She introduced me to many amazing women, and I now can call them family! We have monthly girls' nights, we support each other in our goals, and they even welcome my girls in the classes that I take - what better way for them to learn healthy habits?"

"My girls' grandparents also recently joined the YMCA because of a scholarship, so now they exercise together and swim with their grand-babies as often as they can! This is very exciting because not only are they staying healthy, they are also spending quality time with the little ones - I love it!"

Desiree will soon be competing for the title of Mrs. Washington (she represents our Spokane County) - "since attending the Y, I now have more faces to add to my platform, 'Empowering Women, Men and Children to break the cycle of abuse and end the cycle of Domestic Violence'."

She will never forget the friendships, encouragement and love that the Y has shown her and her daughters. "My 4 year-old even broke her elbow at the North YMCA and she still begs me to return her to her 'friends' and 'teachers'! Powerful - that's the word for the women at the North Y Child Watch. They treat my girls like I would expect anyone who cares for them - like their own.
Penny For Your Thoughts

Last month, when we asked "how are you planning to stay involved at the YMCA during the summer?"

You said...

"My workout routine is a 12-month program. Summer is no different - my arthritis doesn't take summer vacations. It will be a great time to assess how things are going with the goals I set for myself in January" - Nancy

"I'm planning on staying active this summer by continuing with the post-rehab aquatic exercise program... I love it!" - Christine
