YMCA Testimony: Spokane Urology
Spokane Urology is a group of five urologists specializing in surgical and medical management of urinary track problems occurring in both men in women. This includes management of stone disease, incontinence, urinary infections, prostatic enlargement, impotence, infertility, and cancers of the genitourinary system.

Spokane Urology promotes health and wellness to its employees and families by providing memberships to the YMCA. Spokane Urology, known as "The Stream Team," also participates in Bloomsday each year. "With the YMCA having three locations in Spokane, it is very accessible for all our employees. We all love the Y!"

Testimonials: Travis Collins has lost 75 pounds since working out at the YMCA on a daily basis - he is planning to participate in his first half marathon this month. Not only has the Y impacted our employees, but their families as well. Tina Horn's children Corey, Josh, and Alex love all the facilities and have been meeting with their friends at each one. Tracy and Lisa meet most mornings at 5:15am and get their workout in before heading to work.

Recap: LIVESTRONG Day

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA recently held a Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive in honor and celebration of LIVESTRONG Day this past Friday, May 17th. As committed partners in the effort to support survivors of cancer, it is important that we give members of the Spokane community an opportunity to take a meaningful action in the fight against cancer.

Karen Atkinson, a program graduate had this to say - "When I completed my cancer treatment, I felt as though I was hanging on to a new life with an uncertain future. My support team of doctors was suddenly gone once I was no longer a patient. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA gave me a support group of other survivors with similar goals of getting stronger and healthier. The program staff created an encouraging atmosphere of community and provided me with the knowledge that I needed to gain my power."

Nicole Manus, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program Coordinator echoes that sentiment stating, that "each participant works directly with a survivor coach to develop an individualized program to meet their specific needs, but they all gain a sense of community by learning about each other's journeys and growing stronger together. It is a privilege to work with such outstanding individuals from participants to our trainers."

YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes maintain healthy lifestyles by adopting an effective combination of exercises and eating habits. Participants work in a small group setting to learn how to adopt habits that will improve overall health and well-being and reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes.

The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance.

Don Giese's Story: Don's involvement with the YMCA began after his retirement. One morning, a couple who lived next door invited Don to check out and tour the Y while they worked out - and he instantly fell in love. Overweight and out-of-shape, and with added spare time due to his recent retirement, Don decided that it was time to dedicate more time to improving his health.

Before becoming member at the Y, Don was not aware of the Diabetes Prevention Program. He happened to stumble across a flyer advertising the program one day, and it turned out to be the program that has turned his life around. The constant encouragement that he receives from both the Lifestyle Coaches and program members keeps Don coming back five days a week.

"There is a real sense of camaraderie and community between all of the program members that I work out with in the morning... If I don't show up, I hear about it the next morning - we keep track of and care for each other."

As a result of the Diabetes Prevention Program, Don has lost over 100 pounds. "I've told several people about my experiences at the Y, and they have seen the results... Others have been motivated to join the Y simply through hearing my story, which speaks volumes about the way the YMCA conducts itself day in and day out."

Not only has this program resulted in Don's drastic weight loss, it has also opened up many doors for him in respect to recreation. "I can now go on lengthy walks and hikes with my wife, which are a couple of activities that I wasn't able to do before I started the Diabetes Prevention Program... I have found a new area of life that I'm looking forward to exploring in the future."

Y Story:

Cumbie Family

At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development and healthy living, because we believe in nurturing the potential of every child, as well as improving our community's health and well-being.

When you join the Y, you do so knowing that we'll work hard to provide you with a positive environment and an abundance of resources that will help support your journey toward better health. And when things get tough - whether it be family, financial or health issues - the Y will always be there for you.

Take the story of the Cumbie's, a family of four that has found peace of mind at the Y. At two years old, Jennifer and Brian's oldest daughter Anna was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, just four weeks before her baby sister was to be born.

Jennifer and her husband were hopeful when they learned her diagnosis was treatable, but were frightened at the prospect of a 2½ year chemo plan.

Anna continued her chemo for over two years and finally completed her treatment in May of 2009 - Madeline was two at the time.

Anna continued to go to the hospital for checkups every 8 weeks, and was nearing her first anniversary since coming off treatment, when Madeline started getting sick.

Jennifer and Brian knew right away that their youngest daughter had leukemia as well. She was officially diagnosed in April 2010 and was put on the same chemotherapy plan as her older sister.

Jennifer searched for a clean and safe environment for her family to spend time together, and the YMCA pool became their second home.

The other children that Anna and Madeline interacted with were very welcoming, and they didn't judge Madeline for not having any hair. The YMCA was the one place she could be a kid.
