We strive to be caring with our members, honest and open in our relationships with others, respectful of our neighbors and we have a deep sense of responsibility to our community.

Thank you all for making our mission possible!

Spokane Journal Of Business Feature

The Spokane Journal of Business recently published a special report on the YMCA of the Inland Northwest. The article, "Raising the Bar at the YMCA," focuses on our recent Partners For Youth Community Support Campaign.

Excerpt from the article:
CEO Steve Tammaro says that after more than 35 years of working in YMCA leadership in different cities, he is impressed by the generosity among people in the Spokane community. "Spokane is an extremely caring and philanthropic community," he says. "When asked, they will give, and when people give, the whole community gets better."

Exercising Kids' Bodies & Minds
  YMCA's Healthy Kids Day

On Saturday, April 27, the YMCA of the Inland Northwest is celebrating YMCA's Healthy Kids Day®. This event encourages kids in Spokane to get moving and learning, and also gives families tips for living healthier together.

Healthy Kids Day takes place at the Spokane Valley YMCA from 9am - Noon and features active play and educational activities, such as an obstacle course, a bike rodeo, Zumbatomic, R.I.P.P.E.D. for Kids, Kids Yoga Storytime, Drums Alive, and more!

Many children do not get the daily recommended hours of physical activity and reading, and daily amounts of healthy foods.

According to the latest findings of the YMCA's Family Health Snapshot - a survey of parents that gauges their children's activity levels during the school year - only 19 percent of children get 60 minutes of physical activity, only 17 percent read books for fun, and only 12 percent eat at least eight fruits and vegetables daily.

"At the YMCA of the Inland Northwest, we know parents struggle to keep their kids physically and intellectually active every day. We want to help ensure fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school," said Aleisha Colvin, Association Health and Wellness Director.

"YMCA's Healthy Kids Day will get kids moving and learning while also helping families get a jump on creating a healthier summer, and ultimately a healthier future."

Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year.

Tired or Dehydrated?
From Y-USA

Hydration is an important component of healthy living. Drinking enough water isn't just important before a workout or on hot and humid days.

Hydration is critical to our energy levels throughout the day. Water carries oxygen and nutrients to our cells, helps the body regulate temperature, eliminates toxins and waste, and provides a moist and cushioned environment for body tissues and joints.

Drinking more water and eating more water soluble foods increases your hydration level and can lead to more energy and better nutrition. Some suggestions:

1) Keep water handy - At your desk, in your refrigerator, near the couch - and drink continuously throughout the day.

2) Don't wait until you're thirsty - We don't typically feel thirsty until we've already lost a good deal of water, so it's important to drink small amounts throughout the day.

3) Minimize caffeine and alcohol - They act as diuretics and can contribute to dehydration.

4) Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables - All contain water. Top water density foods include citrus, cucumbers, tomatoes, beets, carrots, celery, melon, strawberries and avocado.

5) Make your water more interesting - If plain water doesn't do much for you, add fruit or herbs to jazz it up. Coconut water is another great hydrator.
