Managing Mardi Gras Pass
LPBF continues to watch developments of the river's newest distributary known as Mardi Gras Pass. We are discussing how to safely manage the pass without reducing the flow. We hope that we can avoid going backwards in coastal restoration as would happen with the current permit application by Sundown Energy. Parties have indicated a willingness to discuss options. The public hearing is March 20 at 6pm at the Belle Chasse Auditorium, located at 8398 Hwy 23 in Belle Chasse. |
Cypress Planting-Volunteers Needed

Bayou St. John Marsh Creation Project
LPBF is working with several partners to beneficially use dredge material from Bayou St. John to create a marsh in the bayou near Lake Pontchartrain. The dredging is to enhance water flow into Bayou St. John when the flood gate is safe to open briefly. Some of the dredge material will be placed along the shallow bank where Gulf Saver Bags will be placed to create a wetland habitat. Both the small channel and the marsh should enhance the ecology of the lake and bayou.

Map of Basin Salinity
LPBF has released a Hydrocoast Map for the week of February 25 to March 3. The Hydrocoast Map illustrates the ever changing water conditions across the Pontchartrain Basin. It shows the water salinity patterns across the estuary and fresh water inflows, which influence fishing patterns. The current map shows an overall freshening of the basin due to high rainfall during the week. For more information and to view the map click here. |
