BP Spill Clean-Up Delayed Again
A year and a half ago, BP pledged $1 billion toward coastal restoration projects which were to begin quickly in order to address the massive 2010 well blow-out and oil spill. Phase I of coastal projects was approved in April 2012 for a paltry $57 million - half of which was for projects in Louisiana. There was much anticipation that the Phase II would be more aggressive but that is not the case. This week, Phase II was announced with only $9 million of additional projects, none of which are in Louisiana. Unfortunately, the Natural Damage Resource Assessment (NRDA) process allows BP to veto projects that are proposed by the state or federal agencies involved. With a commitment of only 7% of the BP's billion dollar pledge, it seems to be more about public relations than true restoration or recovery. A copy of the Phase II plan and an online form to submit comments are available here. The Trustees will hold a public meeting on November 13, 2012 in Pensacola, FL to solicit public input on the Draft Phase II Plan. The comment period closes on December 10, 2012. |
