This Month In Petroleum History   
October 21, 1921 – First Natural Gas Well in New Mexico
 
New Mexico must have been nice, because around this time in history they were granted their first commercial natural gas service for Christmas. The New Mexico natural gas industry was launched just a few months earlier, when a new well about 15 miles northeast of Farmington was formed. By 1922, natural gas was available for purchase at a monthly rate of $2 for a heater and $2.25 for a stove.

October 23, 1948 – “Smart Pig” advances Pipeline Inspection Technology
 
Known for helping monitor internal pipeline, PIGs made a significant improvement during this year. The Northern Natural Gas Company recorded the first use of an X-ray machine for internal testing as they examined a 20-in pipeline. This device is now known today as the “smart pig”, taking images of each weld inside pipeline.

October 27, 1763 – Birth of “Father of American Geology”
 
250 years ago on this day, William Maclure, a Scottish geologist and “stratigrapher”, was born. Maclure later became known as the “Father of American Geology”. The events leading up to his alter ego began in 1797 when he embarked on a journey across the eastern part of the United States shortly after settling. This exploration helped him prepare the first colored geological map of the United States.

Southeastern Users Conference Recap

Network. Learn. Train. Engage.

The 2013 Southeastern Region Users Conference made a splash in the lovely and sunny Florida city of Pensacola. The conference kicked off on Monday, October 14 and ended Tuesday, October 15. Nearly 40 people attended the conference. Users networked and engaged with industry peers and other users of the ENERGY worldnet, Inc. Operator Qualification System. 

Key presentation topics included: insight on new training and evaluations enhancements and tools, the use of mobile technology, contractor and compliance management tools, evaluator best practices, ASME B31Q industry standards, training content development, and several roundtable and discussion panels on a variety of industry topics.
