Dealing with change can often be stressful due to the uncertainty that lies behind the consequence of the decisions a business leader faces. Within those decisions, the ambiguity factor is always close at hand. Colin Shaw, the founder and CEO of Beyond Philosophy, shares a few tips on how to overcome the woes of uncertainty and stress caused by ambiguity:
1. Suppress the Urge to Control Things. Feeling a sense of control can be empowering, but life happens. When ambiguity strikes, it creates stress. Let go of the notion that you are in control and go with the flow.
2. Learn to Act Without the Full Picture. It's okay to gather information and data that you have and go with your gut. Waiting for the final tidbit of hard data may never come so use what you have and go with it.
3. Understand That Some of Your Decisions Will be Wrong. And that's okay. You'll learn. Count mistakes as learning opportunities.
4. Work On Your Flexibility. Stretch those adaptability muscles. Don't let pride cause you to fall. Accept that ambiguity can reveal cold-hard facts and truth along the way. Utilize this information to stimulate areas of growth within your business.
5. Be Confident in Yourself and Abilities. You can do it! Know what you can and can't control. Be a good listener, ask for help and don't be afraid to be wrong, lift others up, and own your mistakes. In doing so, you'll create an atmosphere for reacting to ambiguity with confidence.
