Hazard Communications Update: Workers to be Trained by Dec. 1, 2013

Hazard Communication

Reminder! Employers are required to train workers on new Hazard Communication Standard updates by December 1, 2013. The three significant changes are:

  1. Hazard Classification- provides specific criteria for classification of health, physical hazards, and mixtures
  2. Labels- each hazard class and category need to include a matching signal word, pictogram, and both hazardous and precautionary statements
  3. Safety Data Sheets (SDS)- features an updated format broken down into 16-sections

September 12, 1866 - First Oil Discovery in Texas

Following the Civil War, Lyne Taliaferro, a former Confederate soldier drilled the Lone Star State's first commercial oil well in 1866.

 

The Nacogdoches field remains the first and oldest field in Texas. Production was still being recorded as late as 1941 with production reports of eight barrels a day from 40 wells.

September 13, 1957 - First Hawaiian Refinery

On this day in history, Hawaii says aloha to their first oil refinery. Standard Oil of California announced they would build the refinery eight miles west of Pearl Harbor.

September 15, 1886 - Indiana Natural Gas Boom Begins

After the initial natural gas discovery by Eaton Mining & Gas Company, a huge natural gas flame revealed a 5,120 square-mile oil and natural gas field in "Trenton Field", which spreads across 17 counties in Indiana.
