Hazard Communications Update: Workers to be Trained by Dec. 1, 2013
|
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification (GHS) has been incorporated into the Hazard Communications Standard (HCS) and Labeling of Chemicals. According OSHA.gov, the GHS sets an international strategy of consistency across the board for hazard communications and will improve the quality and consistency of understanding hazard information. This includes bringing chemical hazards criteria under a more uniformed classification system, and standardizing the approach to labeling elements and preparing safety data sheets. Employers are required to train workers on new HCS updates by December 1, 2013 on three significant changes: - Hazard Classification- provides specific criteria for classification of health and physical hazards and the classification of mixtures
- Labels- each hazard class and category need to include a harmonized signal word, pictogram, and both hazardous and precautionary statements
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS)- features an updated format broken down into 16-sections
New updates are anticipated to reduce the number of accidents, fatalities, injuries, and illnesses associated with chemical exposures due to workers being able to better understand information about hazards related to the chemicals being handled or exposed. OSHA has estimated a reduction in 43 fatalities and 585 injuries and illnesses. OSHA estimates over 5 million workplaces in the US will be effected by the newly revised HCS. For more detailed information, please refer to the OSHA website-click here. Need Training? ENERGY worldnet, Inc. offers a Hazards Communication training course available in both English and Spanish.

OSHA Proposed Ruling on Crystalline Silica
|
Current crystalline silica parameters are framed around exposure limits that are 40-years-old. These outdated permissible limits are inconsistent between industries and lack in providing adequate health protection standards against the possible threats that crystalline silica can have on one's health such as lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease. OSHA is proposing a new ruling that would bring crystalline silica standards up to date, helping promote a safer and better working environment.
The anticipated results of this new proposal would aid in the annual prevention of nearly 700 deaths and help prevent 1,600 cases of silicosis, a respiratory disease caused by inhaling silica dust.
OSHA is currently in the process of collecting information on the health effects of exposure to crystalline silica. In order to gain more insight, they are highly encouraging participation from the public to share their input.
For more information on how you can help OSHA establish new standards in order to protect and save lives, visit OSHA's silica rulemaking page at www.osha.gov/silica and read Dr. Michaels' post,
on the DOL blog.
