H.L. Hunt and the East Texas Oilfield
|

Discovered in 1930, the East Texas oilfield remains the largest and most prolific oil reservoir ever found in the contiguous United States. The adventurous story of Haroldson Lafayette "H.L." Hunt, his companions and competition, along with some trial and error, and successes help support this great, historic oil discovery.
It was on October 3, 1930 that a production test was being conducted that resulted in the eruption of an oil gusher from the Daisy Bradford No. 3 well. Many were gathered on the scene that day, hoping and waiting to witness such a sight. "Thousands crowded their way to the site of Daisy Bradford No. 3, hoping to be there when and if oil gushed from the well, to wash the misery of the Great Depression away," notes one Kilgore, Texas, historian.
H.L. Hunt was not an overnight success, however. His previous endeavors include taking on the role as a former dishwasher, mule team driver, logger, farmhand, and even a semi-pro baseball try-out. Hunt's drive to be a successful oil tycoon paid off with hard work and perseverance, and eventually lead him to paint much of the petroleum industry's colorful history, which spanned through Arkansas and East Texas.

August 2, 1938 - New Petroleum Product Debuts in Toothbrushes
|
Did you know the first toothbrushes were made using animal hair bristles?! The Weco Products Company of Chicago was the first to introduce nylon bristles to the dental-hygiene market. Those nylon bristles are actually a bi-product of petroleum. So thanks to petroleum and Weco, we no longer have to worry about animal hairs getting stuck in our choppers! August 3, 1942 - War Brings Historic Pipeline Effort
|
WWII left its mark in history on many levels with pipeline construction being one of them.
In response to wartime fuel demands, the "Big Inch" and "Little Big Inch" pipelines became infamously known as the longest petroleum pipeline project ever undertaken in the United States. Visit aoghs.org for the full story.

Daisy, Gas Detection Dog
|
Dogs with trained senses of smell are commonly known for scoping out hidden drugs and explosives. However, that's not always the case. One company, for example,
Canine Oil Pipeline Service, accurately trains dogs to find gas leaks within a matter of minutes.
It's a smart investment. Even though a dog's brain is one-tenth the size of a human brain, the area that controls smell is 40 times larger. This means that depending on the breed, a dog's sense of smell can be up to 10,000,000 times more sensitive than a human being, making the canine a perfect companion for gas leak detection.
Because natural gas is a clean source, a chemical must be added to it for dogs to detect potential leaks. The actual chemical that is used varies per company.
Stationed in Sorrento, Florida, Canine Oil Pipeline Service uses a chemical they call Kopscent. According to Paris Nicholson, president of Canine Oil Pipeline Services, the odorant is injected into the pipeline, and after 24 hours, permeates to the surface where the dog indicates precisely where the leak is located within the buried pipeline.
This leak detection method will soon be available to the general public for the first time. Commencing in 2014, K9 Pipeline Training Academy LLC will be conducting 4-week training courses on the concept of K9 leak detection. The course is taught for individuals or companies that want their own pipeline leak detection dog. Upon completion of the class, participants will receive one highly trained dog.

EPA Updates Oil & Gas Standards for
Storage Tanks
|
Regulations on storage tanks used in crude oil and natural gas production and transmission have been updated by the US Environmental Protection Agency as of August 5, 2013. In order to take another step to help preserve air quality, the EPA has issued a few updates to its original 2012 ruling. Storage tanks that have the capacity to omit 6 or more tons of toxic air pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fall under the 2012 New Source Performance Standards (NSPS). Storage tanks with higher emissions will be controlled first and must meet an emissions reduction by 95 percent. Emissions by storage tanks are now being held to the following adjusted phased-in control deadlines: Group 1 Tanks: Owner/operators must meet a compliance date of April 15, 2015 for tanks that were constructed between August 23, 2011-April 12, 2013 Group 2 Tanks: Owner/operators must meet a compliance deadline of April 15, 2014 or 60 days after startup (whichever is later for tanks that came online after April 12, 2013 Please see the full details on this new ruling by viewing the EPA's Report: FINAL UPDATES TO REQUIREMENTS FOR STORAGE TANKS USED IN OIL AND NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION AND TRANSMISSION.
