Cranes

On April 23, 2013, OSHA issued a final rule that applied the requirements of the August 2010 cranes and derricks in construction standard to demolition work and underground construction. This rule was applied to protect workers from hazards associated with hoisting equipment used during construction activities.

The final rule becomes effective May 23, 2013 and applies the same crane rules to underground construction and demolition that are already being used by other construction sectors.

  Safety Alert - Hazmat Cylinders
Exploded Fiber Cylinder

Recycling & Disposal of Compressed Gas Cylinders
Are your compressed gas cylinders purged? PHMSA reports that cylinders still containing compressed gasses or other hazardous materials are being taken to recycling facilities. These un-purged cylinders pose a very serious risk to both health and safety. Cylinders are pressure vessels intended to hold compressed gasses, and present two serious hazards - the pressurized cylinder itself, which has explosive potential, and the materials being stored within, which may be poisonous or flammable.

For this reason, any cylinder still containing material should be considered hazardous. To ensure that these cylinders are safe for handling they need to be purged of all contents. Recycling and scrap yard facilities should only accept cylinders that have been rendered incapable of holding pressure through methods such as the following:DOT

  • A hole drilled into the sidewall
  • The head valve has been removed
  • The cylinder has been cut open to display the inner walls

In the event that you or one of your employees discovers a cylinder that is suspected of containing compressed gas, move it to a safe place (if it is safe to do so). Once the cylinder has been moved to an appropriate location, notify your Environmental Health & Safety Department immediately. Any and all incidents involving these cylinders must be reported within 30 days to the Department of Transportation (DOT). For more information please visit the DOT website at: www.dot.gov, or by telephone at 800-467-4922.

This is achieved by discussing individual testing techniques and performance observation techniques; reviewing various Operator Qualification Plan Evaluation requirements and by providing practice using actual evaluation tools. Upon completion of this course, participants will understand the requirements of 49 CFR 192 and 195 as it relates to written and performance evaluations, know how to prepare for an evaluation, know how to perform and properly document evaluations, and maintain records.

    SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR TRAINING

The System Administrator Training Course provides designated OQ plan administrators and/or supervisors with a hands-on review of the EWN system and prepares them to effectively manage their OQ program utilizing the ENERGY worldnet, Inc. system and services. This is achieved by discussing the overall layout and navigation of the EWN system for Operators and Contractors; reviewing the features and function of the system and assisting with the setup of custom options and settings; and by providing practice using actual functions, tools and processes.
