November 3, 1900 - First American Auto Show

America's first National Automobile Show opens in New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Manufacturers present 160 different vehicles and conduct driving and maneuverability demonstrations on a 20-foot-wide wooden track that encircles the exhibits.

A 200-foot ramp tests hill-climbing power.

Almost 48,000 visitors pay 50 cents each to see the latest in automotive technology. The most popular models prove to be electric, steam, and gasoline...in that order.

New Yorkers especially welcome electric models as a way to reduce the estimated 450,000 tons of manure, 21 million gallons of urine, and 15,000 horse carcasses that have to be removed from the city's streets each year.

Of the 4,200 automobiles sold in 1900, less than a thousand are powered by gasoline. Within five years however, technology and consumer preference thoroughly establish the dominance of gasoline-powered internal combustion automobiles that continues to this day.

One early critic complained that the internal combustion engine was, "Noxious, noisy, unreliable, and elephantine. It vibrates so violently as to loosen one's dentures. The automobile industry will surely burgeon in America, but this motor will not be a factor."

The critic was wrong. Gasoline, once an unwanted byproduct of kerosene refining, cost only about 15 cents a gallon in 1900 and produced dramatic increases in engine horsepower.

Despite the absence of "filling stations," gasoline was readily available in a market where electric lights were making kerosene obsolete.

November 7, 1965 - Jet Fuel powers New Speed Reco

Using high-octane jet fuel, Ohio drag racer Art Arfons sets the land-speed record at 576.553 miles per hour at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats. His home-made Green Monster is powered by JP-4 fuel (a 50-50 kerosene-gasoline blend) in an afterburner-equipped F-104 Starfighter jet engine.

Between 1964 and 1965, referred to as "The Bonneville Jet Wars," Arfons sets the record three times. On October 23, 1970, the Blue Flame - powered by liquefied natural gas - sets a new record of 622.407 mph that stands for 13 years.

November 8, 1880 - Death of Edwin L. Drake, Founder of U.S. Petroleum Industry

Edwin Laurentine Drake, today recognized as the founder of the American petroleum industry, dies in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, at the age of 61.

Drake drilled just three oil wells - but his first, which found oil on Saturday, August 27, 1859, and produced about 20 barrels a day - launched the modern energy industry and transformed America's future.

Although the petroleum industry will bring economic prosperity to many, in 1863 Drake loses all his money to oil speculation.

By 1873 he is so ill and destitute that the Pennsylvania legislature votes him a $1,500 pension in recognition of his historic contributions.

Originally buried in Bethlehem, Drake is moved to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Titusville, where a monument in his honor is dedicated in 1901. His first well, drilled to 69.5 feet, is nearby at the Drake Well Museum.

November 10, 1854 - Oil Seep will lead to Historic Discovery

The stage is set for the start of America's petroleum industry when the lumber firm Brewer, Watson & Company sells to George H. Bissell and Jonathan G. Eveleth 105 acres at the junction of the east (Pine Creek) and west branches of Oil Creek in Titusville, Pennsylvania.

The lumber company had previously hired Joel D. Angier (a future mayor of Titusville) to collect and sell medicinal "Seneca Oil" from a known oil seep on this acreage where they operated a sawmill.

Thanks to research by his friend Benjamin Silliman Jr., a Yale chemist, Bissell recognized that the oil could be used to produce kerosene for lamps.

Deciding to attempt to produce this oil commercially, Bissell and Eveleth form the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company - and hire Edwin L. Drake to drill their first well in 1859. Drake's well will launch the American petroleum industry.

con ed

November 11, 1884 - Birth of Consolidated Edison Company of New York

America's largest gas utility company is created in New York City when six gas-light companies merge to form the Consolidated Gas Company. Now known as Consolidated Edison Company, "Con Edison" can trace its history still six decades earlier to the New York Gas Light Company.

In 1823, New York Gas received a charter from the New York State Legislature to serve all of Manhattan south of an east-west line created by Grand, Sullivan, and Canal Streets.

"Like most early gas companies, New York Gas would focus its efforts on street lighting, in this case, supplementing or replacing the whale-oil lamps that were installed by the city beginning in the 1760s," explains the Con Edison website. In 1833, the Manhattan Gas Light Company was established to cover Manhattan above Grand and Canal Streets.

EWN Enterprise

New System Features: Enhanced User Experience

As part of our commitment to providing superior technology, quality education content, and unmatched customer service, ENERGY worldnet, Inc. will be releasing some exciting new features for the EWN system. These updates will include enhancements to your user experience.

What to expect:

- New Look & Feel
- Steps toward Browser Independence
- Simplified Navigation Structure
- Drill-Down Menus
- Established New Input Screen Standards

What does this mean for my Employees?

For the Basic User: Employee who uses the system to complete the online training & testing.

Basic users will not be greatly impacted by the new system enhancements. The login and welcome/home page will look different, but the functionality remains the same. The main navigation menus have been replaced with drill-down menus that allow users to expand and collapse each section.

Users will login with their same username and password. To access their training modules, users will click on the link "My Requirements" and access the training just has they are accustomed.

The Individual section still contains links to My Profile, My Task/Training Status, My Job Title Status, My Directly Assigned Evaluations, and the Activity Report for the employee. If users have the permissions, the links to Schedule Training, View Company Links and View Company Forms have been moved from the "Home" page to the drop-down menu in the "Individual" section.

The Message Center link is still available on the "Home" page, as well as the Dashboard for users with the permission.

What does this mean for Supervisors & Administrators?

Users with Supervisor and/or Administrator Permission > These are users within your company that have administrative privileges like assigning tasks, adding users, running reports, submitting evaluations and building courses.

As opposed to the Basic User, Administrators and Supervisors will be more greatly affected by the new system updates.

The most notable change you will see, the "Operator" and "Contractor" sections have been taken from the "Home" page and those elements have been moved to the "Admin" section. As result, you will no longer need to navigate between the Operator/Contractor sections and the "Admin" tab to Add Users, Assign Tasks, View a Task List, and/or run Reports. You can now complete each of these tasks in the "Admin" section.

Another notable change, the "Admin" page links have been reorganized by function to simplify your navigation screen. For example a submenu has been created for Organizational Tools. In this menu you will find the links to Facilities, Groups and Job Titles. The process for adding/editing these remains the same as before.

Remember, it is not how you perform functions in the system that has been updated; it's the navigation-the way you access those functions. This new navigation enhances your browsing experience as the end-user and system admin within your company.

ATTENTION:

EWN System Unavailable for Upgrades

The EWN system will be unavailable during the weekend of November 9th - 11th for upgrades and performance tuning. Beginning Friday, November 9 at 9 p.m. Central Standard Time, users will be unable to access OQ records or complete training. While this is essential to launching system enhancements, we recognize that this may present an inconvenience. We value our clients and appreciate your patience as we strive to continue providing the best in training and data management solutions.

New PHMSA Strategic Plans 2012-2016

PHMSA is introducing the new Strategic Plan 2012-2016 as part of their mission to protect people and environment from the risks of hazardous materials transportations. The nation uses hazardous materials to heat and cool homes, produce energy, transport commercial products, travel for work and recreation, purify our drinking water, fertilize crops, manufacture goods, and many more things. Hazardous materials are vital to our living quality. But they come with risks to the public, the environment, and property during transportation across the country.

Hazardous materials transportation is responsible for about 1.5 % of deaths of all causes. Some workers face higher risks than others. Over the past 25 years, PHMSA has reduced the risk of incidents with death or major injury by four percent every three years. They lead two national safety programs: Hazardous Materials Safety and Pipeline Safety.

chart

Some of the key areas PHMSA wants to focus on are:

Changes in risk exposure, aging/obsolete pipeline infrastructure, excavation damage to pipelines, corrosion, hazmat bulk transportation that is toxic by inhalation, fires on aircraft, tank truck crashes, human error, understanding of risks, mitigation and response, technology advances, and public perception of risks.

Some of the strategies PHMSA wants to use are:

Better understanding and targeting risks, strong enforcement, strong safety culture, safety management systems, collaboration, more public education and awareness, using technology, strong organizational methods, employee support, and healthy work environments.

EWN Sponsors Chamber Lunch
ENERGY Worldnet, Inc. sponsored the Decatur Chamber of Commerce lunch in September.  Geoff Isbell spoke to the crowd about the work that we do, our visibility in the community, and our future plans.  We gave away caps, pens, koozies, and notepads.  We also had a drawing for an ice chest, that was won by Susan Miller of James Wood Motors.
EWN Welcomes Jake Munta to our Team

jakeENERGY worldnet, Inc is excited to have Jake Munta join us as our new  Director of Information Technology.  Jake is not a stranger to us as he has worked as a contract employee. He has vast knowledge in the field as he has been working in it for 13 years.  Eleven of those years were in hard-core analysis/architecture/development.

Problem solving is one of his best assets along with his experience with enterprise level systems and framework library.  He is also experienced in ease of development with best test capabilities with build in frameworks.

Jake has a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.  He is originally from India, but calls Dallas, TX,  home where he lives with his wife, Nikita.  They are involved with many charity organizations there and feel very blessed.  In his spare time, Jake likes to go fly fishing, play chess and golf, cook, and participate in Mensa.

 Rhonda DuBois Returns to EWN

RhondaENERGY worldnet, Inc. welcomes Rhonda DuBois to the Business Development Team.  Rhonda was a Regional Account Executive for EWN from 2008-2011, but reluctantly left due to demands of a growing family. She has three sons, Ryan, 20, Tucker, 14, and Chris, 10. Ryan attends school in Mississippi, but Tucker and Chris are very involved in football and baseball in Decatur, Texas.

Besides her family, Rhonda is active in her church. She has a passion, however, called Pass It On, whereby she collects used athletic clothing and gear and makes it available to children who can't afford it otherwise. This sometimes makes the difference in whether or not a child can play on an organized team, having the right equipment. EWN is so happy to have Rhonda back!

See a message from Rhonda below.

I would like to express a humble "Thank you" to the ENERGY worldnet, Inc. family, especially Dr. and Mr. Hornback , and to all of our clients, colleagues and friends in the industry for welcoming me back with open arms.  It feels terrific to be part of the team again and I am looking forward to the process of reconnecting with everyone and once again representing ENERGY worldnet, Inc. to the best of my ability.

Sincerely,

Rhonda DuBois

Regional Account Executive
