Conference Highlights
 |
Geoff Isbell, Chief Operating Officer for EWN |
It was wonderful to see many new and long-time clients in Decatur, Texas on October 1st through the 4th for the EWN 2012 Annual Conference & Expo and training classes.
The EWN Annual Conference provides the opportunity for utility and pipeline companies, contractors, consultants and exhibitors to stay up-to-date on industry activities, to discuss new products and services, and to network with peers. The key focus of the conference is to provide critical information that 1) promotes safety; 2) drives efficiency, productivity and regulatory compliance; 3) reviews new technology and development progress; 4) identifies and establishes future training opportunities and industry needs; and 5) shares experiences and best practices from lessons learned. Attendees gain professional exposure to valuable industry contacts and opportunities for networking to resolve particular issues that are important to their respective company.
Presentation and discussion topics for 2012 included a powerful "Buried Alive" safety awareness message from Eric Guigere, and presentations on API 1161 and ASME B31Q Task Standard updates, Disaster Recovery, Barnett Shale Natural Gas Drilling, Next Generation Leadership, Line Locating, Leak Detection, Aerial Leak Surveys, Utility Asset Installation and Protection, Compressed Natural Gas vehicles, PHMSA Regulatory updates, new EWN system releases and functionality, and the use of Mobile Technology for training and evaluations. Concurrent training events were also held before and after the conference for the Master Evaluator Certification Program, Basic Administration and Advances Administration and Course Authoring. EWN thanks all the instructors, moderators and speakers for their contributions. Speaker presentations will be posted on EWN's web site in October.
EWN would also like to recognize and thank the 10 companies which participated in the vendor exhibit: Atmos Energy, AGvantage, Bridge Masters, Inc., Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Heath Consultants, iCopy, Leak Detection Service, Pergam Technical Services, Secor and Wise Wireless.

Down in the Trenches
ENERGY worldnet, Inc. was fortunate to have as our keynote speaker, Eric Giguere. Eric spoke of being buried alive in a trench while helping to install a 12-inch water main in upstate New York. "Everything I felt, down in that trench, fighting for my life, happened in less than a second, because I wasn't willing to make safety a priority. One second is all it takes to change people's lives forever."
Eric's speech made a huge impact on the audience, telling about how his buddy had to call Eric's wife to tell her he probably wasn't coming home alive. They had been married six days and were planning to leave on their honeymoon that night. Instead of being in the Caribbean, after being buried under a ton of soil, Eric spent time in the hospital.

Eric Giguere, Keynote Speaker |
Several members of the audience said that this had made them aware of their own safety programs. Allan Herauf of Bridge Masters in Bent, Oregon, stated that in 35 years, they had never had an accident. But he now realizes that even more awareness of safety will be part of his routine with his staff. He plans to implement more care for safety in the future.
Eric's company, Safety Awareness Solutions, has become his career now. He has a mission to make safety awareness a part of everyone's lives, as disregarding safety can change a life in a second. "Money isn't the reason we go to work. We work for our wives, our husbands, our kids and grandkids, our parents, our brothers and sisters. They're why we get up and go to work every morning." Eric wants to make sure everyone goes home every evening.
