Instances of child abuse in Butte County have decreased steadily as preventive programs reach out to high-risk families.

Over the past five years, the number of children in foster care has dropped from 740 in 2005 to 472 in May 2013. In 2008, there were 4,582 child abuse reports in Butte County and in 2012, there were 3,689. From January through May of this year, there were 1,558 reports of child abuse.

The decrease in children being removed from homes and abuse instances can be attributed to a new focus in preventative programs that address family dynamics.
