Greetings!
This month, we'd like to discuss a common dilemma that is frequently brought up by many of our callers.
Suppose you are on a budget and cannot afford the flawless 4-carat yellow sapphire you have been admiring. You have two choices:
1.) Purchase an inexpensive yellow sapphire, or
2.) Purchase an unheated yellow topaz.
Which will bring you better results for your money?
While many people with limited funds are inclined to purchase a cheap sapphire they can afford because it is technically a primary gemstone, it is important to remember that the quality of the material you are investing in is a crucial factor in determining whether or not any astrological benefit will be acquired from wearing the gem.
|
Buyer beware: The criteria for what makes a "Jyotish quality" gemstone, as seen with the yellow sapphires above, varies dramatically from one source to another. Which of these two unheated yellow sapphires do you think will be the most powerful? |
|
Secondary gemstones, or uparatnas, can absorb and transmit a planetary frequency similar to that found within primary Jyotish gemstones even though they are technically different minerals.
The color of a good quality uparatna is similar to a primary gemstone, however, is not identical. This means that the planetary energy within an uparatna is not quite as concentrated. We recommend wearing larger stones to compensate for this, the size depending on the type of gem being worn. (Yellow topaz should start around 4 carats, for example, whereas a citrine should start around 8 carats. A yellow sapphire, Jupiter's primary gemstone, begins to display effectiveness for Vedic Astrology around the 2 carat size.)
Remember: A flawless yellow topaz will be many times more powerful than a yellow sapphire that is heat-treated or included.
|
On the same wavelength: A 3-carat yellow sapphire placed next to a 7-carat yellow topaz, the uparatna for Jupiter.

People will often ask us this related question as well: Should I simply wait until I can afford a primary gemstone if it is more effective than an uparatna, or should I purchase a secondary stone now even though it is not going to be quite as powerful?
To answer simply, it is our experience that investing in a top-quality secondary Jyotish gemstone to start will often increase support of nature for the wearer, and subsequently, abundance. Even if an astrological gem does not directly bring money your way, it may bring about an increase in health, vitality, motivation, courage, creativity, or other means that can indirectly assist with the development of wealth in your life.
Once your secondary gemstone has essentially paid for itself, a more expensive primary gem can be purchased to augment the benefits that you have already been receiving.
Below is a table of Jyotish gemstones listed in order of ranking. A larger version of this image can be seen on our homepage.
In summary, regarding uparatnas, it is always better to wear something than nothing at all, given that quality is taken into consideration first and foremost. All of the gems we select for our inventory are pure enough to transmit planetary influence, providing noticeable changes and desired results for Jyotish.
Wishing you the very best,
