Time for the Tomatoes!

Mr Stripey

We released our first crop of one gallon size tomato plants. The weather is cooperating and the plants are large, healthy and fully acclimated. The production numbers of many heirloom varieties are limited, so we suggest you hurry in and pick up your choices, even if you are not ready to plant at this time.  They will hold for several weeks in the current containers, but will appreciate being planted in your containers or beds soon!

Planting your Tomatoes is fun and easy!

If planting in a container or pot, you do not need a fancy pot. A regular black nursery container is adequate. A larger container will require less frequent watering and will maintain better root area heat throughout the evening hours.  Better roots systems allow better nutrient uptake for bigger and more luscious tomatoes!   Want to grow the very best tomatoes in the hood? Follow these simple tips and you will be the envy of your neighbors. Whether you grow in a container, raised bed or in the garden, the steps are basically the same.

1. Select healthy plants to start, such as our fresh locally grown plants that have not traveled across the county in a tractor trailer rig!

 2. Start with clean, weed free soil. We prefer well drained soil like our Gardeners Secret blend.
3. Find a sunny location. Begin by digging your hole several inches deeper

than it was while in the pot. (Planting deep allows new roots to form, creating better nutrient uptake.) Next place in the bottom of the hole a hand full of garden lime to sweeten the soil and a quarter cup of organic dry slow release fertilizer, like Dr. Earth or Happy Frog.
Before planting you might also want to add two tablespoons of Mykos mycorrhizae inoculate. This organic product will enhance the tomatoes roots ability to uptake more nutrients. Work the soil  slightly and plant directly on top of of your enhancements.
 4. Water well now.  Make sure you have good drainage. For the first few days you may experience a slight wilt, due to transplant shock. Generally water when the top of the soil becomes dry.
5. In the following week after transplant, it will be time to start fertilizing on a regular Mykos basis. We suggest you start with a organic slow release dry fertilizer on the surface of the soil. You may then want to use a high quality organic liquid fertilizer like Fox Farm "Grow" or "Bloom". Liquid nutrients are formulated to quickly enter the plant and enhance the current stage of growth.  For additional hints come in and we will be happy to speak with you. Good luck on your tomato harvest and remember to share your huge crop with your neighbors.  Have fun!
