Its Rose Pruning and Cleanup Time!

Rose Drawing For some of us, the thought of pruning our roses brings up a very subtle "thumpity thump" of the heart. OK, let's put those fears behind you right now! Pruning, almost any kind of pruning, is good for the plant! Roses are a very hardy and forgiving living plant.

So, let's get started. First think, what is the goal? The major goal, in yearly maintenance, is to help with new growth by giving plenty of light and fresh airflow through the plant. A simple way to visualize this is to think of rose Pruning creating a bowl, or as Cisco says an urn shape. Secondly, your goal might be to reduce the size  of the rose. Simply start by cutting out all the dead wood. Dead wood has only brown inside and no lighter or green layers. Go as far down that cane as necessary. Then next, cut out any those "crossing" canes in the bush. If it looks like the cane is going the wrong direction, it probably is!

Now the only question may be is, How far do I take it down? Fortunately that decision in our area is really an easy choice. Many experts will say, take off 1/3 to 1/2 of the height of the original cane. This is considered light to moderate pruning. Consider the shape, size and placement of the rose. Either choice is perfect.

Once you decide, and always using sharp and clean pruners, make a sloping cut Rose Cut Angle above a current bud. An angled cut helps water runoff and decreases the amount of time water remains on the new cut. Continue with all the remaining "old canes" Then clean up the ground around the rose, picking up all the old leaves, stems and any leftover debris. Simple, your almost done!

Now fertilize! We recommend Fox Farm American Pride Organic fertilizer. As American Pride Rose the roses come out of dormancy, they have stored a Gardeninbloomcertain amount of energy to start their budding and leaf formation. As the soil warms, the hair roots are beginning to grow from the larger roots and are seeking nutrients to build those strong canes and flowers. And what they really like, is easy to find food! Organic Mulch will help maintain moisture levels too, as well as reduce the need for weeding. We suggest Kellogg Organic Compost for this final step.

By pruning, cleaning and feeding this year, you will create  great roses in  your garden. As your confidence builds in rose care, each year your roses will become even more magnificent! Have fun with them; enjoy the beautiful flowers, the fragrance and perhaps even sipping on rose hip tea this fall!
