News From Wells Brothers Pet, Lawn & Garden Supply

September is a great time to live in Texas!  Football season is starting, hunting season is here and the State Fair of Texas is right around the corner!  It really is the most wonderful time of year!

A big thank you to everyone who came out for our first ever, Fall Organic Gardening Seminar.  We had a great turnout, learned lots and will have beautiful, organic gardens gowning in no time flat!

Now is the time to prepare your fall gardens. In the next couple of weeks our porch will be full of fall vegetable plants.  Keep an eye on Facebook and we'll post when they arrive.

I don't take the death of public personalities too hard. There are hundreds of folks all over the world that die every day. Most of them have become the best of the best in their life. They all deserve the same respect and reverence as any public figure. However, I think the death of Robin Williams has left a hole in the world. I will miss his work and remember him this way.

Fall Gardens: What To Plant & When?

Many of our customers ask me when to plant specific crops. Onions and garlic should arrive in the store around mid-September and can be planted as soon as they are available. Planting tomatoes and peppers can be a little risky in September, but you can do it. Choose tomato varieties with less than 65 days to maturity labels and keep ... Read More
Preparing Your Lawn For Fall

September through mid to late October is the timeline to apply fall pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn. For what it's worth, the National Weather Service is predicting a cool and wet fall. With that in mind, pre-emergent herbicides must be active in the environment at the time of germination to be effective. Seeds follow Mother Nature's schedule and ...
It's Back...The Cabbage Looper

One of the most annoying critters we fight in the cool weather is the Cabbage Looper. A green inch worm looking bug that loves leafy plants. They can be very damaging but they are also easy to control. You need to inspect the garden to identify the problem before they get out of hand. The farmers call this crop inspection, ... Read More
Control Garden Pests With Beneficial Nematodes

Did you have issues with squash bugs, squash vine bores, cucumber beetles or root nematodes this past spring? Taking a page from Sun Tzu's Art of War, and attack them when they are at their weakest which would be in dormancy. The weapon to use against these destructive pests are beneficial nematodes. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic, subterranean worms that ... Read More
2014 Texas State Fair

The 2014 Texas State Fair kicks off September 26 - October 19, 2014 at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. Each year more than 5,200 students participate in the youth events and leadership contests. But you don't have to show an animal in a livestock contest to enjoy this piece of the State Fair. Check the daily schedule for contest times and come and support these s ... Read More
A Little September History

All these events happened in September. Some long ago and some in recent history. September 1, 1985 - Dr. Robert Ballard found the wreck of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland. September 2, 1864 - General William T. Sherman and his army, during the American Civil War, captured Atlanta. "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won," was telegraphed to President Lincoln. September 4, 1886 - The last major U. ...
