Support Erie's Mission |

Dear Friends of Erie,
As the Affordable Care Act continues expanding access to care, Erie is growing at an unprecedented pace to care for thousands of new patients. We have been planning for these changes and recently announced administrative and clinical leadership restructuring that was designed to ensure Erie remains poised to excel in the future.
In this issue of Spotlight, we recognize some of our partnerships and programs that are helping us expand the health care workforce and patient outreach to build healthier communities. Our Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program recently accepted its fourth class of residents to train as primary care physicians. Additionally, at the new Erie Foster Avenue Health Center, Swedish Covenant Hospital's resident physicians will work alongside Erie doctors to learn our model of community-based medicine.
Erie's partnerships with national and local volunteer organizations are instrumental to our ability to reach out and engage patients in healthier lives. One of our current Americorps members recently received a Governor's Volunteer Service Award. These partnerships also help us build our own workforce. Several previous Americorps members are now employed as health care professionals at Erie.
Finally, I want to personally invite you to attend Erie's Annual Luncheon on Thursday, May 16th at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago. Erie will be honoring health care champions and innovators for their contributions to community health. I look forward to seeing you there! |
All the best of health,
Lee Francis, MD, MPH

Erie residency program top choice to train primary care doctors

We're proud to welcome our fourth class of resident physicians at Erie's Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program, a partnership among Erie, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Norwegian American Hospital. The new doctors hold degrees from some of the nation's top medical schools as well as many distinguished honors. Erie's program was their first choice for training in community medicine.
While there is currently a growing shortage of primary care doctors, more residents are also expressing interest in training at community health centers, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. Erie's residency program was established to expand opportunities and prepare the next generation of leaders in community-based care. Three graduates from our original class of residents will remain to practice at Erie upon graduation this summer.

New Foster Avenue site poised to grow physician workforce
When Erie Foster Avenue Health Center opens on the campus of Swedish Covenant Hospital, it will be ready to train its first class of 48 resident physicians in community-based medicine. Internal medicine and family practice residents will work alongside Erie doctors to learn our model of care and expand opportunities within the primary care workforce. Doctors trained at community health centers are three times more likely to work in them, according to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration.
Opening July 1, Erie Foster Avenue will expand the delivery of Erie's signature high quality care to residents of the hospital's community on the northwest side of Chicago. At full capacity, the new site will provide medical, dental and behavioral health care for 8,500 patients. |
Americorps member at Erie wins Governor's Volunteer Service Award
On April 18, Americorps member Melissa Rothman received a prestigious Governor's Volunteer Service Award for her outstanding service with Erie patients. Melissa is currently one of 10 volunteers who provide important outreach services at Erie, including diabetes, nutrition and HIV/AIDS counseling, prenatal and breast healt classes, oral health counseling and crisis intervention.
Erie's long-standing partnership with Americorps-facilitated through Chicago Health Corps, Illinois Public Health Association and Amate House-expands Erie's ability to engage more patients in healthier lifestyles and build the health care workforce. Previous volunteers now employed by Erie are Marian Byrd, Shirley Fitzgerald, Sally Goodman, Julissa Flores and Benjamin Harris. |
