March 2014

Dear

We'd like to do something a little different this month, and take a moment to explore something in our monthly clinical article. This month's article is aimed at Nurse Managers, who are often vital in the selection of products that are used for the prevention and treatment of heel pressure ulcers.

In the article, the author says:

"Clinical considerations in selecting an optimal heel protector device should include:
* whether the device elevates the heel off the underlying support surface while protecting the foot drop and rotation of the leg
* the ability to decrease friction/shear
* whether the device allows the patient to be ambulated
* the ability to be cleaned
* the ability to remain in place while the patient may be moving the leg
* decreasing heat to the heels
* cost."

Using these criteria, the Heelift® Glide has several important advantages over the competition. It's a cooler and less expensive alternative to pillow boots, it can be washed in a regular washing machine, and it stays in place better. In short it's an effective offloading device that moves with the patient rather than moving on the patient.

The durable exterior cover allows the boot to move easily over the sheets and under the blankets no matter how that patient is positioned. The forefoot strap keeps the boot firmly in place. The laboratory-tested superior microclimate present in all Heelift boots means a more comfortable boot that keeps moisture away, protecting skin from breakdown.

As for ambulation and superior foot drop support, you'll also want to consider the redesigned Heelift®AFO. A semi-rigid brace keeps the foot in place, while the non-slip tread makes the Heelift AFO better for patient transfers and limited ambulation.

We think the Heelift Glide  and Heelift AFO are  great additions to your heel pressure ulcer prevention and treatment protocol. Click the link below to request your free trial and see for yourself.

We'd love to hear your thoughts. So many of you have written us from these newsletters to request a sample, please drop us a line at this address to tell us what you think. Haven't seen a sample? Use the link below to request one now.

Preventing heel pressure ulcers: Economic
and legal implications
By Courtney H. Lyder, ND, GNP, FAAN

Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs) are a challenging concern for nurse administrators. Not only are pressure ulcers painful for patients, but they can also be painfully costly for hospitals. The introduction in 2008 of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) policy for nonpayment of Stages III and IV HAPUs places an additional burden on nursing administration to aggressively prevent these ulcers from developing. Heel pressure ulcers are the second most common pressure ulcer location, yet there's little research focused on the prevention of these ulcers.

This article reviews the current literature related to preventing HAPUs and provides guidance on the critical role of nurse managers to decrease the incidence of heel ulcers.
