October 2013

Dear

First of all, we want to thank all of you who stopped by to see our newest innovations at the Wild on Wounds and SAWC Fall Conferences in September. We were overrun with visitors from the very first few moments of the exhibits, and it was great to see so many people wanting to learn about the Heelift® Glide and the redesigned Heelift® AFO. For those who couldn't make it, you've got one more chance to see us in 2013, at the Clinical Symposium on Wound Care in Orlando. We'll be in booth #409.

Before we get to this month's article , we wanted to ask a favor. Would anyone else in your facility benefit from these monthly bulletins? If so, use the "forward e-mail" link below. That will allow your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter in one easy step. We don't use your e-mail for any other purpose, and we only send one e-mail per month. We count on our current subscribers to spread the word, so we appreciate your help.

Our feature article looks at long term care, and ever-growing implementation of palliative care. it's a fairly recent article, so it's certainly worth a read.

In addition to our article and news story this month, we've launched a new feature. Our website features a wealth of clinical information, most of which is stored on our Nursing Station. We'll highlight one resource available there every month, starting with a white paper we just published.
We'd love to hear from you. Have you tried the new Heelift Glide yet? If so, drop us a line and let us know what you think.

Sincerely,

Denis Drennan, MD

The Medicare program often paints a far rosier picture of hospitals' pressure ulcer rates than is indicated by data collected bedside by nurses, according to a newly published study.

Palliative Care of Pressure Ulcers in Long-Term Care

Torrie Burt, MSN, CRNP

In recent years, palliative care has become increasingly more common due to the rising number of older adults who are living with chronic and debilitating illnesses. Approximately 300 million individuals-about 3% of the world population-receive palliative care or end-of-life care each year.

The World Health Organization defines palliative care as an "approach that improves the quality of life in patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illnesses."

The Classification of Pressure Ulcers as "Never Events"

Are pressure ulcers really "never events?" While they may be classified as such, some may not really be completely avoidable. But what does that mean for your facility?
