WOC Nurse Week 2013

Dear

Happy WOC Nurse Week! We try to let all of the clinicians who subscribe to our newsletters know just how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to the  treatment and prevention of heel pressure ulcers. But once a year, we allow ourselves to single out one group of nurses without whom we would never be able to do what we do.

Our article this month is a paper from the WOCN® Society. Obviously, home health care is only part of the continuum of care, but the basic lessons from this paper could be applied to long term care or acute care as well.

We've long known that our most ardent fans and supporters are WOCNs, and we've received quite a lot of feedback over the years from members of the WOCN® Society. It was that feedback that has allowed us to create the next step forward in heel pressure relief, the Heelift® Glide.

The Heelift Glide has a soft exterior cover that allows it to move easily across the sheets (and under blankets) decreasing the likelihood that the boot will displace. A forefoot strap supports the foot and further secures the boot in place. The extended forefoot protects more of the foot and keeps blankets and sheets away from sensitive skin. Plus, it's 40% lighter than a pillow style boot while also being cooler and less bulky. You know the Heelift name, so give the new Heelift Glide a look in your facility. See the sample request form below.

You can also see the Heelift Glide at one of our upcoming conferences. We'll be at the Spring SAWC conference in Denver (at booth #1001
) and of course we'll be at the WOCN Annual Conference in Seattle (at booth #1101).

Finally, in appreciation of all those who educate the wound care nurses of tomorrow, we came across a video you won't be able to get out of your head. The video is from Susan Foster R.N. CWOCN, it features students from Merritt College and you can see it here. We can't quite make out the lyrics at the end, but one of our staff members was pretty sure they were saying "use a Heelift brand offloading boot to relieve pressure."

Again, have a happy WOC Nurse Week, and remember we'd love to hear from you. You can e-mail us at this address.

Sincerely,

Denis Drennan, MD

Effectiveness of Wound, Ostomy and Continence-Certified Nurses on Individual Patient Outcomes in Home Health Care
Bliss, Donna Z.; Westra, Bonnie L.; Savik, Kay; Hou, Yuefeng

The purpose of this paper is to assess whether there was a significant improvement and stabilization (not worse at discharge) in pressure ulcers, lower extremity venous ulcers, surgical wounds, urinary incontinence, bowel incontinence, and urinary tract infections in home health care (HHC) patients cared for by a certified WOC nurse.
