clinician's bulletin

November 2012

Dear

With the end of 2012 quickly approaching, it's time to start thinking about 2013. Many of you are no doubt in the process of planning for the year already, so we wanted to alert you to something that we strongly advise any clinician who has an interest in the treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers to attend.

The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel will hold its Biennial Conference in The Woodlands, TX (just outside Houston) on February 22-23. Rather than go into detail about the theme of the conference, "Deep Tissue Injury: the State of the Science," or the  excellent program that will be presented in both the Best Practices and Consensus tracks, we'll simply include the conference brochure  that will give you all the information you need.

This meeting only happens every two years, so you don't want to miss it. No doubt if you're planning for next year, you're also setting your budget for next year, so you should know that there is an early registration discount as well as a group discount if you attend with others from your institution. As longtime sponsors of the NPUAP, we wanted to pass along the information to you for this most worthwhile educational opportunity. Convinced? You can register here.

Speaking of educational opportunities, (and the NPUAP), this month's article is from Dr. Joyce Black et. al. on the issue of avoidable vs. unavoidable pressure ulcers. It's well worth your time.

Finally, please don't forget to take our short survey. We're confident it won't take more than 2 minutes of your time, and you'll be entered into a drawing for a $100 Amex gift card.

We'd love to hear from you. Questions? Comments about any of our products? Don't hesitate to e-mail me at this address.

Sincerely,

Denis B. Drennan, MD
President, DM Systems Inc.

Pressure Ulcers: Avoidable or Unavoidable?

Joyce M. Black, PhD, RN, CPSN, CWCN, FAAN; Laura E. Edsberg, PhD; Mona M. Baharestani, PhD, APN, CWON, CWS; Diane Langemo, PhD, RN, FAAN; Margaret Goldberg, RN, MSN, CWOCN; Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, GNP, CWOCN; Janet Cuddigan, PhD, RN, CWCN; and the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel

Although pressure ulcer (PrU) development is now generally considered an indicator for quality of care, questions and concerns about situations in which they are unavoidable remain. Considering the importance of this issue and
the lack of available research data, in 2010 the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) hosted a multidisciplinary conference to establish consensus on whether there are individuals in whom pressure ulcer development may be unavoidable and whether a difference exists between end-of-life skin changes and pressure ulcers.

We need your input! Answer our brief (5 questions) survey for a chance to win a $100 AMEX gift card. The survey is important to us, and it should only take 2 minutes of your time. Thanks!
