Say "No" to SB 249 - A Bill Aimed at Gutting Local Control of Factory Farms
If enacted, Senate Bill 249 would prohibit cities, towns, and counties from passing ordinances or other protections to stop new construction or expansion of livestock operations. In other words, rural communities that are adversely impacted by foul odors, air and water pollution, reduced property values and degraded quality of life from the enormous amount of waste produced at factory farms would not be able to say enough is enough.
These communities would be prevented from passing more protective setbacks, limits on size or number of animals, or otherwise impose any new restrictions that would limit the growth of factory farms. SB 249 flies in the face of Indiana's long-held tradition of "Home Rule" - a policy based on the idea that local governments are in a better position than the State to know what's best for their communities and citizens.
Please help us defeat SB 249. This dangerous Bill is scheduled for its first committee hearing this Monday at 10:00 a.m. before the Senate Agriculture Committee.
